Bretloth Posted May 18, 2011 (edited) With all the variety getting around now I'd like to here everyones opinions about their best or favorite cactus or clone, and for what reasons. Pics would be awesome so we can all see the differences! ;) My favorite is a grafted loph i've had for about three odd years now sourced from funky fungus. Is nice and big now with 13 side pups and has started doing a funky spiral type thing. Grows in quick spurts and suprises often. My favorite tricho is a valida cutting only had it two months but it's already my favorite. Big fat spiny bastard! I love it! I saw the parent, watched it being cut off and know it's real valida, I can't trust anything with KK attached. Supposed to be the most potent tricho which doesn't hurt but it's rareness is more enticing for me. I never really liked the tree trichos until I saw a 50 year morphing valida, and then the photos of it flowering.. All over!!! I think I jizzed a little, honestly. Going to love growing with them. Trichocereus Validus is not a very familiar cactus to me... Where did you hear its the strongest trich? I felt sure I wouldve heard more of it if it has a reputation as 'the strongest'. My understanding was bridgeys and TBM's tend to be the stronger genetics. The loph is inside, no artificial lighting. The new growth gets that light green to it. I let it dry right out between waterings but she's more than happy. Got my valida from John Fields, the son of the original collector in Aus. Don't have any for trade or sale, just got the one. More interesting is that for T bridgesii and T pachanoi Agurell published this data: Trichocereus bridgesii Agurell 69.2 >50mg/100g mescaline >50% Trichocereus pachanoi Agurell 69.2 >50mg/100g mescaline >50% Now this is the exact same range he gives for T validus, so he did not report validus having any more or less mescaline than T pachanoi or T bridgesii. He said in all three cases that there was 25+mg mescaline per 100g fresh, I do not know why it would be believed that T. validus was reported to be strongest, but I have read this online in a few locations, often with someone misreading the data to actually believe that the plant contains 50% mescaline, which is certainly not the case. At his reported 25+mg/100g range his reported concentration indicates something like 0.025% fresh. As I said it's supposed to be, as in i'd read that in few places. We all know they vary etc. There is however a good chance it's potent, which as I said doesn't hurt but isn't why I like it. niggles Posted May 19, 2011 My favorite Cactus by personality is my first - Apparently it was a psych0 x Super ped... but fellow plantheads argue about that. Anyhow his name is Wonglepong, and in 5 years he has gone from a pup the size of my pinky fingernail to 3.5 feet with two arms thicker than my own. Of course a hybrid between it and a bridgesii form SS02, a bridgesioid plant, would not resemble a peruvianus. I've never seen the TPM parent, it may be one of the pachanoid plants that was sold and traded under the dubious epithet Short Spine peruvianus Monstrose, if that is the case then the cross is pachanoid X bridgesioid, but it is too young to see what it will look like when mature. The siblings of the plant (that are slightly or non monstrose at all) do resemble a pachanoid/bridgesioid in phenotype. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Posted May 20, 2011 I have tidied up this thread a lil bit, guys can you please stay within the forum guidelines, bretloth, if you arent familiar with the cacti forum rules have a look in the pinned threads, same goes for anyone else that has forgotten or isnt aware of them!. As for favourites, is hard to say for sure but i do love my tricho crests, i have a "peruvianus" crest from hamiltons and 2 super pedro x j3 crests, all 3 have been grafted a few times. Since grafting and a little stronger light the hamiltons crest is showing spines more in line with a cuzco type plant imo. Im also quiet partial to lophs and tbms The 2 SPxJ3 mother crests are the left and right front, one has been cut into a great deal more than the other, the grafts in the purple pots are from the crest on the left and the other 3 smaller crests are from the one on the right. I have others from the crest on the rights but they are showing more normal growth which will hopefully change in time, hard to say at this stage.
