Help me save this old girl

Recommended Posts

I saved this poor old thing along with a couple of others from a uncared for garden a couple of years ago.

This season she started to show some new growth which is great but the scabby bits are growing as well.

Most of the cacti that I have saved normally look like crap but the new growth is usually normal but not this one

Can anyone help with a way to stop this spreading without chopping her up?

1) she's not a trich

2) I'd probably isolate her from the rest of the collection

3) to prevent scabby growth where the scabby area is, you'll need to cut away the affected area & treat the remaining flesh with powdered sulfur.

It doesnt look like the new tip growth is affected by the scabbiness so I'd just let her be, just isolate from the rest of the collection.

I bought a T.taquimbalensis (thanks for the ID bit) a year and a half ago while it was very dark. I didn't notice the scabbing on it. The scabbing was faster than the new growth. So i cut the tip to try to save it. However, the tip rotted and the stump pupped. The new pup (still growing) doesn't have any of the scabbing on it.

So maybe topping it might bring out new growth with no scabbing.

I really have no clue but this is my one and only experience with scabbing like yours.

Good luck.

Not that I know what it is, but what about it tells you it's not a trichocereus?

I think it's Polaskia chichipe.

Thanks for the replies

All of my other cacti that had scabby/scaly skin the new growth is always nice and green and unmarked

This one’s problem seems to be different it comes up in wart type lumps they aren’t soft or mushy. I am thinking I might try a copper based or mancozeb fungicide first and see what happens. Is there any reason not to use this on cacti?

Chopping this up will be my last resort I really would like to work out what is causing the problem

Tripsis thanks for the ID it looks right from a quick google.

When I was looking at pics of Polaskia chichipe on the net I found this site that has some amazing mature cacti. Cactus Mania

The fat trichs, crests and monstrose are truly amazing defiantly worth a look.

Cheers

This is Myrtillocactus schenckii.

Scabbing doesn't happen out of the blue on new growth, this happens due to some trauma the cactus has suffered, at this age this can be a sun burn or insect damage. These are scars and they won't spread, I'd let it be.
