Coumarins - I am going through a phase

Recommended Posts

I've always liked the subtle aroma of Justicia pectoralis. Then a couple of years ago I discovered zubrowka and a few weeks ago finally managed to source some buffalo grass. But the king of coumarins would have to be the Tonka bean. I am completely smitten with it. So potent that a piece the size of a small sandgrain will burn the tongue quite badly, but at a lower dose it is quite sublime.

anyone else into coumarins [besides t st tantra that is ] ?

Woodruf (Galium odoratum) is quite nice too, it makes a nice sedating tea ! Very strong smell and easy to grow but i don't know if it is present in Australia.

Do you extract coumarin at home as a hobby?

I must admit i do love the smell of fresh cut grass!

I guess zubrowka is a coumarin extract, so yes ;)

and mauve, you are so right. How could I forget woodruff. it doesn't gow well around here so I am more inclined to look at other sources. and I think you'd need a few kilos of woodruff to give the same coumarin quantity that is in a single tonka bean :drool2:

well, actually, all you need is some normal vodka, add some buffalo grass and you have zubrowka. I think tonka vodka will ultimately be much better though. more flavour with less 'green' taste. a piece of vanilla pod helps with complexity. best drunk with apple juice :drool2:

I just got a whole kilo of tonka beans so I am VERY excited. [oh, and anyone interested in coumarins, just keep in mind that they are toxic, so don't over do it]

Sounds pretty good. Are you going to try and grow Tonka bean trees Torsten?

Tonka seed has VERY short viability, but I have a supplier who will send some as soon as they are ripe. so yes, hopefully will have some trees growing eventually.

does the coumarin in the vodka avoid overusage of the alcohol?

does your zubrowka help you to have more controll over your food intake?

i mean maybe it has potential as a diet aid!

maybe it stopps one from drinking too much, hehe.

tonka beans are great, awesome scent to them, and were used to flavour tobacco snuffs, before they were banned for that use.

A little while back I was trying to find info on D. odorata cultivation, and came across this site. It might be of interest to some.
