Edible mushrooms

Question

I'm pretty sure I've eaten these ones with no problem before but thought I'd better make sure.

These mushrooms pushed through 2-3cm of hard packed clay topsoil to expose themselves. It was right next

to a dry creek bed. The gills are pink intially but as the mushroom gets older they go brown then black.

Still taking spore prints. The stem is 2-3cm in width and the cap is mostly white however where the cap is

uneven the clay has stained the caps brown. I washed them first as there was a lot of clay stuck to them.

I'm interested to know the name and am pretty sure they're safe to eat but it's always good to get a second opinion.

So let me know before dinner when they're going in my pasta.

Do they have an annulus? There seems to be evidence of one. Are you sure the gills turn black, not just dark brown?

If they have an annulus and the gills only turn to dark brown, they are an Agaricus species, but I couldn't tell you which one. Apparently all red-staining Agaricus species are edible.

Yeah I checked they do have a veil and I think the gills only go black as the mushroom is starting to decay. But some are definitely black but only on the older ones. Spores are definitely brown.

Alright, it's an Agaricus species. Some are poisonous, so keep that in mind.

Thanks mate, I'm pretty sure this is the one I've eaten lots of times before and it did bruise/stain red.

They look yummy but if you don't post in here tomorrow, we'll know whats happened! :P

They look similiar to ones that grow in the Adelaide parklands that my mother used to bring home and feed to us.

Thankfully we survived :lol: but I certainly wouldn't want to gamble with mushrooms!

yep they're agaricus alright

most bad agaricus have yellow stainings and different [phenolic - inky] odour.

But I am not quite sure if there is none bad red staining. To my knowledge there's none.

nevertheless, guarantee is the nice agaric smell

Well I'm pleased I took spore prints, they were delicious.

They did have a nice earthy Agaricus smell.

The huge amount of rain recently has promoted hundreds of these mushrooms to pop up all over the place.

Looks like I'll be having them more often. At least while the rain continues.

Do you think this is the same? Usually all I find around here are yellow stainers but I came across a massive amount of these today, also in S.A. Older specimens have black gills.

This was the whitest one, most were quite reddish. Agaricus campestris maybe?

campestris is a good bet for this one, but one ought ot take a look at the more reddish ones to make a proper ID. agaricus are delicious and with experience , reading and SENSIBILITY you can eat many species of them regularly.

IDing them is another thing and some times it's a pain in the ass to proper ID them. At least for greek species.

As far as I'm aware all Agaricus are edible except for the ones that contain phenol i.e. yellow stainers, & I've even eaten them.

I think the red colouring appears with age, younger ones are white.

That's what i know too, but you never know. Apparently there are other inedible Agaricus or of controversial edibility in bibliography. And yes, some people are said to eat A.xanthodermus with no ill effect, but it's reported to spoil any dish. A friend has eaten it deliberately with no ill effect.

I eat those Agaricus that smell nice to me, aniseed, nutty, almondy, regardless of otherwise ID. The fresher and younger, the better. Babies are awesome raw. But some people are hesitant with Agaricus and it's understandable. Caution can never harm when playing with mushrooms

Yes, I do think it's the same species strangebrew, I ate them with no ill effects. In fact they tasted really good.

I'm pleased I took spore prints, I'm going to try and propagate them nearer the house, outside & non-sterlie.

Hopefully it works. They seem to grow prolifically as long as they have the moisture and the mycelium obviously

dries out with no ill effects, probably just halts growth.

Nah not the same, mine turned out to be yellow stainers yet again.

The 1st I picked must have been up awhile and lost their smell and changed colour, I've never seen any that red before but new ones coming up now in the same place are definately ys's. Too bad they hadn't changed their taste as well.
