where to blue bamboo

Recommended Posts

Seems you can't order young baboo sapling anywhere in aus, they also appear to be very expensive and pick-up only. Anyone know a good site besides bambooland?

I am after a nice blue specoes of bamboo, a young plant from a mail site or a nursery in se qld/ ne Nsw.

Any advice asppreciated, as I havent come across this before, bamboo seems unusually hard to get a hand on.

Also even a species name for this blue bamboo ius elusive. I think weeping himalayan has a blue tinge, not like this though.

Sorry, I can't help, but jeez... I've never seen bamboo like that before. I would have assumed that photo was shopped if it didn't have the accompanying text.

Where is bamboo like that native to? What a beautiful hue.

I read the blus is just the bloom (powdery substance on new culms) on the newer culms , it causes the plant to look deceivingly blue.

'quote'

Blue bamboos, White bamboos and Red bamboos all have moments in their lives when they are absolutely blue, red or maybe white. But these are moments. The spectacular color usually occurs when the plant is putting up its newest canes. Blue and White bamboos throw new shoots that are covered with a lot of powder (sometimes called bloom). When the canes are covered in this powder they appear (convincingly) to be blue. If you look at the photos on this site you will see examples of this color. None of the photos have been digitally altered but they were taken at particular moments in the life of the plants.

Examples of blue and white bamboos are:

The bottom one looks like "Java black" it starts out dark greenish then turns black & stays black.

You do need to cut out the old culms to keep it looking good though since they tend to go a crappy brownish grey after a few years but its still a stunner.

As with all plants with a bloom, they look fantastic till the first heavy rain then after that they are just nice.

Unless you want to grow them under cover & only ever water around the roots.

Oh and don't let the kids touch them!!!! the bloom rubs straight off and it doest grow back :BANGHEAD2: You'll see little finger prints forever :o

bamboo, is one of the most incredible plants, fast grower, strong, attractive, and sometimes yummy food!

when ever i see a bamboo patch, i suddenly change a bit into a similar person like "adam" from the myth busters,

when he is allowed to blow something up, in short, the inner child surfaces.

because bamboo is soooo versetal.

i would always educate kids about the bamboo's abilety to cause sever cuts, if they have a "bamboo adventure".

bamboo, must have some inbuild mechanism, which triggers creativety in primates, and

one can make everything out of bamboo. apart from being a spectacualr landscape plant, it can grow you stakes for your tom's or even the building material for the cubby house, or scaffolding at a skyscraper.

some bamboo's are said to flower only once every 120 years, but if they do, all flower at the same time, all over the world!! how does the bamboo in south america know, that his buddy in asia is doining the same??!!

Amazing, sounds like some sort of group conciousness or 100 monkey effect.

Dworx you have helped me a tonne, i couldnt find this info anywhere, and yeah really beautiful colours. Thanks.

I think you can eat some young shoots as well, so yeah you can makes heaps of shiz from it and eat it, But don t smoke it. I would think. Heh, I searched this and found a vid of some idiot smoking bamboo. Seems it is almost/equally as useful as weed.

In my young and foolish days , myself and a few Friends jumped the Melbourne Botanical gardens fence at night as our plan was to come out of there with a length of the lovely black bamboo that they had / have growing there.( to make something ). There was a security guard on patrol who walked right past us crouching in some bushes. We got spooked and never made another attempt.blush.gif
