TheFriendlyPlanter Posted December 12, 2009 LOVE IT! Where the F do you get a rock drill anyway? Must be rather expensive I assume.
Sola Posted July 16, 2010 That does look good! Does anyone know what would be required to drill rock? Hard rock at that. It looks very similar to rock I've used from a local quarry and I can say from experience it's hard work to shape it for building into a wall. Just drilling lots of smaller holes would be enough. Then you could chip out the remainder with a bolster. Sola
dr dognutz Posted July 17, 2010 you can get large drill bits designed for that sort of work, im sure that you could rig up the drill bit with an air compressor attachment to get the job done.
Sola Posted July 17, 2010 Cheers doctor, I'll be on the lookout. What attachment would I attach to my compressor? Sola
dr dognutz Posted July 17, 2010 I have a mate in W.A that is more of an expert on this matter than me... I've mailed him to get the cheapest and most suited options for you Sola
Sola Posted July 17, 2010 Too good..I'll be waiting on the prescription doctor Cheers Sola
ThunderIdeal Posted July 17, 2010 i agree that they look cool but am i missing something? do you have loads of rocks on your property maybe? similar things are sold without the 'rough hewn' look by the way. i'm guessing they're not carved out of solid stone though. Sola Posted July 17, 2010 I do have lots of stone, some very similar to what's in the photo. Others are softer like a pinky sandstone but the blue stone would take something serious to get through. I try to use as much of the available material from right here whenever I'm constructing something. Just thought it might be an interesting exercise to try. If it worked I'd do it again. That's usually how it goes. Sola
shortly Posted July 18, 2010 They could well be cut from solid stone, its not that difficult with the softer sedimentary stones. I doubt it would be worthwhile to do it here though, they get imported from Asia cheap as chips, quite often the shipping etc is more expensive than the goods. dr dognutz Posted July 18, 2010 Heres wat you need Sola, Hammer drill Diamond coated "core" drill bit (for large hole) Masonary drill bit (for drainage hole) Cold Chisel (for breaking the core) use plenty of water when drilling thru the stone and you should be fine. This is the most cost effective method. i hope this helps brutha,
Sola Posted July 20, 2010 You're a champion! Thanks for the info. I'm off to the hardware store, got the Cold Chisel here already tho Sola
dr dognutz Posted July 20, 2010 Your welcome mate, i was thinking about having a go at it myself. If you use a smaller sized core drill bit and drilled multiple core holes and chiselled out the unwanted rock you could come up with some intersting shaped holes aswell, clovers etc. just a thought. good luck with your project mate
