kenny Posted May 29, 2009 To those of you who attended the melb meet and scored some of those lovely sage cuttings Has anyone struck any roots yet? Mine have been sitting in a jar for what feels like an eternity Previously when I would take cuttings they had rooted within several days, however I was living in more tropical conditions back then. They seem fine and I'm sure it will happen. Just curious how others have been going.

They seem fine and I'm sure it will happen. Just curious how others have been going. i did not make the latest meet but the one before and [our and /your ] cutting now is doing fine outside but in shelter frost should not get to it ............... however it was about the 3rd week i did see roots starting to form (but was warmer then) i made sure it was out of direct sunlight at all times.. i all so noticed that the cutting used water (when in a glass) and topped it up before it fell bellow leafless nodes and it did grow 2 top leaves then in 3 days roots like crazy then into some dodgey potting mix it went ......now it lives and is healthy looking hope it makes it through to summer i should have taken pics ........i will next year (if all the planets line up) [edit] [and yes goodness to sharxx for making the melb meets happen] Edited May 29, 2009 by tardistestpilot
Teotzlcoatl Posted May 29, 2009 (edited) Sage cuttings? PM me. I have all sorts of Sages including "Dan Shen" and.... others. Edited May 29, 2009 by Teotz'
kenny Posted May 30, 2009 Thanks testpilot, it must be the cold weather. Teotz, your in the USA by the looks of it. Not sure how much luck you would have exporting live plant matter to me
Conan Troutman Posted May 30, 2009 if you cant strike Labiatae its time to give up gardening cold weather means mother plant is not actively growing it will take awhile to show roots and deffo not the best time of year to take cuts. IMO easier to place directly into moist soil in warm place at 100% humidity.

Torsten Posted May 30, 2009 you mean well, but it really is pointless posting overseas live plant material sources for australian residents [look in his profile box]. The quarantine fines and trouble you can get into for importing a live plant or cutting are comparable to importing drugs. If your plant in question is also a scheduled drug then the trouble is twice as bad. Salvia is in australia and no one is going to be desperate enough to try and import a cutting. mac Posted May 30, 2009 (edited) many salvia species are available here, teotz as for the list you posted, it may be here in Oz but the chances of getting hold of a cutting even for identification is slim for the majority of us , one day they may change the law for the better & let people cultivate it once again (wishful thinking) Edited May 31, 2009 by mac
Teotzlcoatl Posted May 30, 2009 Well alright, anybody who is in other nations can use that vendor list then. There are lots of people from all over here.

Teotzlcoatl Posted May 31, 2009 Well what was it about?
Torsten Posted May 31, 2009 Well what was it about? Teotz, do you ever actually READ any posts or do you just read the titles? I mean, why ask that question if all you need to do is scroll up and have a look? Geez you are infuriating. He was not asking for cuttings. he wasn't asking for sources. he asked two very specific questions. why should he have to repeat them? they were as plain and obvious as they can be. and kenny, temp is probably the issue as you probably figured by now. the lower the temp the longer they take to root and the greater the chance that they will rot before rooting. if you don't have at least some roots after 2-3 weeks you are really pushing your luck. Teotzlcoatl Posted May 31, 2009 I thought I knew what it was about, but apparently I was wrong! if you don't have at least some roots after 2-3 weeks you are really pushing your luck. One time (over this past winter) it took me two months to root a Sage cutting! But it did root! So... just keep trying! Maybe add some rooting hormone. mac Posted May 31, 2009 i have some S cocinna seed & a couple of other variety's i can take cuttings from if anyone is interested in some other species
kenny Posted June 1, 2009 Well Well Well! I brought the cuttings back inside this morning and I just noticed two distinct bumps on the side of the stem. Which if i recall correctly, this means roots are right around the corner mac; Sounds good! recently I have been making regular trips to bunnings in search of different salvia's, which are usually dirt cheap What other variety's do you have? I'm not sure on the correct terminology but do you have any that are not hybridized or crossed. Heirloom ?
Teotzlcoatl Posted June 1, 2009 They should do fine, just add some type of rooting mixture and place in warm water. You can probably plant it in soil in a week or two.
