Plant ID

Recommended Posts

There's an area near where I live with loads of trees I believe to be acacias. Some I'm sure are maidenii (There's at least 3 varieties).

I only have photos of one of the trees at the moment (and after reading another post, I'm not sure if this one's acacia at all); I'll take more photos tomorrow...

It was actually this thread with pics of a plant much like mine...only I'm sure mine's not hakea due to the curled seed pods...

Anyhow, here's some more photos of more trees I took today. I appreciate any help towards their identification.

Picture 1 is not even an Acacia..I think its something like a Hakea or Grevilia even..pic 2 is interesting as the seed pods are very Madenii like.

Im fairly new to the id of acacia but the one in the first pic of post #1 looks like Acacia bakeri to me

The distinctive veins in the leaf & colour of stem & leaf tips is a dead giveaway.

Here is a link of A. bakeri from herbalistics for comparison http://www.herbalistics.com.au/shop/produc...products_id=378

Psilli,

What region do you live in?

I'm not if it works like this, but all the Maidenii's i've met around the A.C.T area have dried, long dispersed seeds by now.

North Coast NSW. Funny thing is these trees dropped their seeds around spring but have new curly pods growing now. I haven't seen much evidence of flowering on most of them...

May be sophorae up that way, was it found near the coast? And how tall was it...was it tree like or shrub like.

Peace

I live in ballina and there are what I believe to be sophorae growing near the beaches and along creeks etc. They seem to tolerate a lot of water and the foliage spreads right out along the ground - Often doesn't look like a tree.

These trees are inland a bit near lismore, and I'm sure they're not bakeri. The phylodes are too narrow and don't have longitudinal veins quite that prominent. They average 3-4m tall. While they all have the curly seed pods, there is some variation between them (mainly shape and size of the phylodes - some have bipenate leaves on new growth and red tips on phylodes, some do not; some have pointed apexes some are rounded) I'm not sure how much variation can be found within one species.

Perhaps I'll take some phylode and seed pod samples and compare to a key. I'll be out that way tomorrow so I'll get some more photos as well.

Thanks for the responses

I have seen what I believe to be sophorae up to around 5m tall, closer to the beach than lismore though so its probably not it :)

Peace

Sophrae doesn't have curly seed pods like that ..they are usually straight or slightly curved.
