Prophet Posted March 3, 2007 Just curious do all trichocereus species produce monstrose and cristate plants or are some species more prone to going monstrose or cristate when seed grown? for example can you get a monstrose peruvianus? or a monstrose scopulicola? Does anyone know? i have seen pics of cristate and monstrose pachanoi and monstrose bridgesii but no other species.

Prophet Posted March 4, 2007 kool, i'm interested in seeing any other pics of monstrose or cristate plants that people may have. I have one bridgesii seedling that looked very much monstrose with some really wierd growth but now its starting to look a bit more normal so i don't know how it will turn out. Moses Posted March 4, 2007 here's one i'm not sure of, it was the only cacti on the site i got it from and was only listed as 'trichocereus species monstrose'
Jonny Deformed Posted March 4, 2007 (edited) Cereus peruvianus monstrose Whats going on here then? Here's another like yours MOSES. Where it is darker green was absolutely covered in scale. Scrubbed it all off with a dust pan brush. Is there such a strain that doesn't have ribs? Like the rounded limbs of bridgesii monstrose only columnar like pachanoi. Edited March 4, 2007 by JD. apothecary Posted March 4, 2007 I am pretty sure those are Cereus peruvianus monstrose (the last one JD posted and MOSES unsure one). It seems bridgesii is a lot more prone to going in and out of monstrose growth than other species.
shruman Posted March 4, 2007 Do older or very old plants produce seed with more tendancies to have these variations? Im sure Ive heard that somewhere. Nice plants all, love that shot of jd's cuzco? with the hopper very cool.
apothecary Posted March 4, 2007 I thought as cacti reach a mature age the branches all tend to become very uniform. I don't own any really old cacti though so this is just conjecture.

teonanacatl Posted March 5, 2007 Cristate cuzco, The one top right is not sure about the others. Cristate pachanoi which went normal after placing under fluoros, grafts and cuttings were taken and they are now monstrose. Variegated cuzco, just for the hell of it
teonanacatl Posted March 5, 2007 Seed from cristate plants has a higher cristate occurance. I offered cereus monstrose pollen for a while but noone was interested.
