throw away your TV

Recommended Posts

Just had a squizz...looks very interesting....but what i really picked up on is the topic....throw away your TV...shit yeah!!!

I did about 8 motnhs ago and it was the best thing I've done in years.

Was at a mates place last night and had to sit through the channel 9 news and that god-awful 'current affairs' show (ie sensational tabloid crap) that follows.

People, lots of people, watch that shit...fear laden, lurid tripe that made me want to retch.

I'm still shaking it off....what yucky energy *shudder*

Agreed!

Pretty much the only thing the tv gets used for in our house is for wiggles dvds and the like. It has been this way for years and i wouldnt want it any other way... The only down side is that im never up to date on current afairs, but thats ok, I figure that if any news is important enuff it will find me anyway.

So yeah throw out ur tv, or at least unplug the antenae :wink:B)

Sorry, but I'm a self confessed Foxtel addict. I don't watch the news EVER. 24/7 wheather is nice though. Comedy channel(Trailer Park boys!!!),southpark everyday! Cartoon network/disney= loony toons, winnie the poo, etc. ABC, ABC2, SBS all in digital widescreen. Dolby surround on movies.

World most bias news!!! Fox news, lol, makes me sick to my stomach watching that crap!!!

Foxtel radio, great light classical all day and JJJ for those of us outside broadcast area.

But if I din't have foxtel, the only thing the TV would get used for is ABC and SBS 2-3 times a week.

I am within a fortnight of my first anniversary of having no TV. Personally feels like one of the best things I've done. Most of my friends think I'm crazy for having no TV...so it's good to know I'm not alone. :)

I use my television to watch 2 to 3 hours of docos from ABC or SBS per week, otherwise it doubles up as a rudimentary book shelf (poetic justice methinks!)

i owe foxtel over 200 bucks and will never pay them.

Reason: Crappy programming!

Most importantly, they cancelled futurama and funded more Simpsons, just because mainstream society doesn't like "science fiction".

Also when I still had the movie channels they always mostly just showed the stupid rightwing mainstream american society movies which I don't care about.

not enough science-fiction.

To hell with foxtel, I do my own programming with soulseek.

Just got a new 68cm-tv (very cheap from aldi) which is mostly used by son for x-box.

I have the premium package, so I find it has great programming. Except the fuckin ringtone ad's every 5 min on the music channels. They just play shit, but the women in the film clips r hot  .

5 doco channels, so there's always sumthinmg worth watching just on 1 of those 5 channels. CI(crime investigation network) is always interesting, watching police in action solving crimes and being racist and beating up black people while being nice to whities. Even the black cops are fuckin racist dicks, picking on the black man over the white.

I agree that the movie channels are normally shit. But lately cheech and chong movies have been on all the time, lethal weapons, rambo's etc all the classics. O and SAW just made me peak hard core the other week when it came on.

New episodes of futurama aswell as new south parks. The daily show is a funny satirical news show that burns the shit out of bush and american politics.

24/7 cooking channel, for all those budding chefs or enthusiastic home chefs.

Extreme sport channel for all ur snow/skate/surf/motoX and heaps of other cool random new extreme sports. Red bull team base jumping, rock climbing, caving.

I know I'll prob get ripped for saying this, but frasier and seinfeld are two of my favourite shows(yes yes I know american crap, but it makes me laugh)

The only reason I'd want to get rid of foxtel is so I don't watch so much T.V.

Also since I'm in the country and don't have decent radio reception, they have 20 or so radio station in digital quality. I just need a decent sound card, so I can also add internet radio to that list.

Peace out

naja

P.S. Old B&W Walter Mattau and Jack Lemmon films are classic comedies. And Marilon Munro was fucking insanely gorgous.

Frasier and sienfield are great. I'm real fussy with tv shows, but throwing away my tv, I know I'd miss out on some great stuff - like the PlanetEarth series on abc! Mind blowing photography, all cacti fans missed out tonight. Not to mention the psychedelic lizards. Last weeks was better though, discoveries of new species. And I can't even begin to explain the untouched beauty of those Crystal caves, definetly bying the series.

What I try to avoid with TV, is the sickening examples of this heavily oppressed and greatly depressed world/society we live in. Such as crime shows, and, well, most programs.

I'm well aware of the cruel reality we live in, but don't need it to be watching it.

So true, and I do miss the docos and quality drama/comedy etc...but, unfortunately, I lack self control when it comes to the box, and would sometimes find myself watching absolute shite.

Also, it was hard restricting my 5 year-olds viewing to non-commerical...I've really noticed she asks for alot less 'stuff' now because she's not exposed to advertising.

Well, except when she's at her Nan's watching foxtel...and what's the deal with that? Pay TV with ads??

I agree whole heartedly onz. I don't think going to either extreme would really work for me, and I personally don't have too much trouble finding a balance. There's nothing like a good documentary on a lazy Sunday afternoon, and I don't know if my existence would be worthwhile without Lost ( :P ), but I do acknowledge that the majority of what is broadcast is absolute garbage. I don't think being in the vicinity of the occasional news or "current affairs" program is going to be detrimental to my general well being, so long as I remain aware of the intent behind these programs (ie, to gain ratings by whatever means necessary), and continue to recognise the realities of fear mongering and rampant consumerism and all the other "evils" that constitute the television industry. To the contrary, I think there could even be some benefit in being exposed to some of the less desirable aspects; in our household for example, the "garbage" programs quite regularly provoke discussion of just how dishonest and appalling the industry is, which in turn probably assists us in maintaining a healthy and realistic attitude towards the media.

As for children's viewing, I agree that it can be very difficult to regulate. I often let them watch a small amount of TV in the afternoon (playschool is the usual), and of course ABC is great for it's lack of product advertisements. When they've had their time I just switch it off and they go off and play without too much fuss. We also have a no-TV-before-school thing happening. It's pretty easy going for now, but I imagine I will have more difficulty keeping on top of it as they grow older .

A quote from Mark Pesce at EB04 neatly summarised my feelings and has remained in my memory:

"If perception is the food of consciousness, we need to start watching our diets".

There's some good stuff on TV but you have to be selective.

I never watch news or "current affairs" on TV. I watch:

1. Selected series like Top Gear; a car show from the UK which is funny and entertaining. On SBS

2. Documentaries on SBS Sunday nights, also science programs like Catalyst on ABC and Beyond Tomorrow sometimes.

3. World Poker Tour on Saturday nights.

4. Chaser's War on Everything on ABC.

I have a digital TV recorder that allows skipping of commercials. So I record these automatically and watch them at times when it suits me skipping all commercials not that I watch much commercial TV anyhow. About the only show with commercials I watch is World Poker Tour and being late at night, that's got those 'call me now' type sex commercials and I might let the odd one of those play ;)

This is my problem, too. Yeah there is the odd good show on TV, doco's and what not...hell, I'll admit it, I miss The Simpsons!

It was a personal choice for me, 'cos if I saw anything "opinion" related, like the news or current affairs I'd just get all :ana: so it's much healthier for me to stay away. I get a short news fix on the net, but nothing in depth. It might be a cop out, but I really don't wanna watch or absorb all the negative things going on in the world...now I prefer to read a good book, and gaze at my lovely new cactus

I have to admit, I'm a TV advocate.

I just don;t think that people can control their consumption. Back in the day people went to see drama on stage and in operas, then ancient Greeks had all that drama going on and cavemen liked to watch people dance out stories etc.

Performance entertainment is such a large part of what it is to be human and creative. This is what makes "reality TV" so hard to digest, I reckon.

Yes, most of it is just BS but it definitely does allow people with writing talent an outlet of some form. It also gives people discussion but not so much as plays and stuff did. Because you watch it in your home it doesn't force you to socialise and react with other audience members. That's what I don't like about TV.
