oxydiser Posted June 26, 2006 YEEEEEEHAW! Exams are over!!! I hope all board members sitting exams over the last few weeks have made it through with brains and souls intact The gf and I have decided to head over east for a hard-earned break in sunny melbourne! I was wondering if the ethnobots of melbourne (or those that have been there) could play travel agent and help me out with a couple of questions? - the location of any ethnobotany shops/markets? - the name/location of any good rock/punk/metal venues? - the top three quintessentially melbourne things one should experience? Your responses are greatly appreciated

nabraxas Posted June 26, 2006 check out Polyester book shop in Brunswick Street for some "TOTALLY WEIRD SHIT". The Sofitel hotel at 25 Collins Street has excellent views ov the city from its Atrium bar on level 35, the view from the toilets is really cool.

RonnySimulacrum Posted June 26, 2006 What's this library? It is more than a library, it an ethnobotany experience, well in paper back Why you are there, go for a walk in the Dandenong Ranges http://www.parkweb.vic.gov.au/1park_display.cfm?park=

oxydiser Posted June 27, 2006 Thanks heaps for the responses guys. Tripitaka, I am going for a week starting on the 6th July, although the way things are panning out I don't think I'll have time to shit! I was talking with some people at work today, who reckon Crown casino cannot be missed for the sheer size/monstrosity/ecclectic aspect, although I'm not a gambler is it worth spending a night at? Also, are the queen victoria/st andrews markets only open on the weekends (sat+sun)? Could they be explored in a day? We've set apart one day for hardcore shopping (the gf is still breaking my balls about that one though )

_e_ Posted June 30, 2006 if u smoke a joint at sky high be sure to leave a mobile phone in offerring to appease the mountain elves... spiders Posted June 30, 2006 drinking a pint with the denizens of the Exford is also a must, before walking outside to kiss face with any chick that asks for $20 for a headjob. Then you can wander along Russell st while the bums try to sell you a 'cap' and you try and talk them into ringing their 'friends who live in the richmond highrise' for some acid or white powders... The lounge used to be a great place to visit - the balcony was a must when i was younger in the late 90s, but nowdays you might see a guy with a UR top on, but other than that most people will vomit on you if you dare to ask if there is anything around... Happy Hgh Herb is the only herbal shop im aware of and Ferret is much more accustomed to it than i, so he might be able to give you better advice. I didnt realise people still played metal so im no good there... You can see some rough and nasty bands at the dingdong lounge - i usualy go there when ive had a few or the lollies make me - lately more often the later than the former thankfully... i forgot your last question! spiders Posted June 30, 2006 and the st.andrew's pub is a laugh as well - as long as your cool with paying $1 to get Eftpos... i work with some of the locals from out there - they often fantise about shooting people so be warned...
Pala Posted July 2, 2006 Maybe not as exciting as some of the other stuff, (but if you're looking for a cheap lunch in the city) I quite like Crossways. It's 123 Swanston, and you'd need to look out for it, cause its just a doorway showing some stairs. It's a Hare Krishna resteraunt. They're only open for a couple of hours at lunch. It $5.00 for the meal. Very nice.

oxydiser Posted July 20, 2006 Thanks heaps guys, the week in Melbourne was a godsend and everything I hoped it to be. Awesome nightlife (esplanade hotel and arthouse were hightlights). The royal botanical gardens were kickass (the themes!!! the herb section!! ...although the cactus glasshouse could have had more access). Saw snow for the first time and feared for my life half way down an intermediate slope on Mt Buller. Got threatened on a tram in St Kilda by a chromehead! And in coles central by a midget 40 year old punk! But in all a eclectic and exciting place. I would love to live there for a year or two in my youth but I don't know if I would raise a family there.
