Spanishfly Posted December 5, 2015 (edited) Today I harvested some seed from my Astrophytum caput-medusae , which flowered for the first time this year. I don´t know if this species is self- fertile (who does?) - otherwise it will be hybrid. But I got 20 big, black seeds. BedOSpines Posted December 5, 2015 Congrats, caput-medusae is on my to acquire list. Finally got some nice square pots, apparently auspost is delivering on a Saturday repotted most of my collection, managed to free up lots of wasted space. Also the tbm decided to pup today
2XB Posted December 7, 2015 I am still re/up potting :-) so many. .. anyway the reason for my post is I found some sweet filter medium at work last week, 6-12mm, excess to requirements obviously.. .. been using on latest repots. it is such a lush mulch/dressing!!! Cactus in pic is a ss02 x Serra canyon dichotomous seedling. Can anyone tell me is a dichotomous seedling has more chance of throwing dichotomous limbs?? ???

watertrade Posted December 8, 2015 (edited) I just counted the seeds from this seed pod. Exactly 80 seeds! I have never seen anything like it! Zelly - you know loph seeds ;) have you ever seen anything like that? I thought I found a contender to beat the 'number of seeds in one pod' prize but alas, only 54 seeds in this one ;) This may have been one generation from the original. But I wouldn't want to jump the gun and claim I have found a mutant super hybrid capable of producing thousands of seeds per season.... And may be the answer to world hunger.. Just sayin Edited December 8, 2015 by watertrade
pinegapcontrol Posted December 12, 2015 second occurrence of fields pachanoi self terminating as a sausage plant would. trust me there was no damage on either of them, I watched them both happen on a daily basis, i watched the tips go funky, then terminate and shoot.
Nibbana Posted December 12, 2015 Nice pup bedofspines, my two TBM have pupped in the last few weeks too. The first pic was taken on 25/11 and the second pic just yesterday. So it's about 3 weeks old... the pups seem to grow pretty quick. Noticed last week that the other TBM had also pupped. Not sure how long this one has been growing but looking good! :D These were the first two cacti given to me which started off my collection so I'm very happy to see the sudden new growth

theuserformallyknownasd00d Posted December 15, 2015 I was hoping someone could help me out, I have a half faded label and would like to work it out before its lost forever as i have 2 lovely plants and a crest that belongs to this label lol. Anyways I received them approx 3yrs ago as 1" seedlings, I'm almost certain they were Huarazensis x NI bridgesii. Was this a cross at the time or am I imagining the NI and bridgesii part? The only bit not faded is Huarazensis, the rest of the crosses are all here and I am almost sure there was a bridgesii cross in the mix originally? Ps I have since switched to pencils for labels, a year or two ago actually, I hate faded labels
Derkshaman Posted December 16, 2015 (edited) It's been getting cold where I live. Got some hard freezes coming. Rainy & wet, too. Not concerned with established plants, I just covered their tips. But I have a lot of cacti that aren't really established, and they got rained on a bit... Moved them inside in front of a very bright window, until it stops freezing and raining outside. About half of these were imported from AU! Grampa's old tractor, in the background. \]\ Psycho0 feels the need to put out new thorns before it worries about rooting. Here's a little graft that's been growing like Crazy. Juul's Giant x Lumberjack. Edited December 16, 2015 by Derkshaman
Psyentist Posted December 16, 2015 (edited) I'm almost certain they were Huarazensis x NI bridgesii. Was this a cross at the time or am I imagining the NI and bridgesii part? I received some some seeds labeled as huarazensis x N1 around that time, originally from nitrogen I believe, so I think you're on the money there mate. Should grow into a beautiful plant I'd imagine! You got any pics? edit: Here's a pic of mine. Only got one to germinate unfortunately... Edited December 16, 2015 by Psyentist

Spanishfly Posted December 17, 2015 (edited) It being December, and now definitely winter here, this week my guys went into their winter quarters. Cold frames and a couple of mini-greenhouses, to keep them dry. We can get some prolonged spells of torrential rain, which can lead to rot. This way they stay dry during their winter rest, and are raring to go in the spring. Some pics of two of my cold frames. BedOSpines Posted December 21, 2015 So I've come to the conclusion that the little aztekium seeds i tried grafting are not aztekium. Growing way to fast and don't look anything like it. Any idea what I might have? Seeds are super tiny like strombocactus.
