Osprey Posted March 27, 2006 These 3 types of bridgesii are going into mass propigation. From left to right are:A nice clone of T.Bridgesii,T.Baker,& SS02. I will cut all the tips to 20"& make the mid-sections 6-8" long(for motherplants). When I find clones I like,I want to propigate the hell out of them and eventually end up with a nice hedge. I will post pictures of phase two tomorrow.I will also post a picture of the 3 different type tips together. They are quite distinct. the 2nd pic shows the T.Bridgesii&the T.Baker The 3rd pic shows T.Baker 4th pic is Baker &SS02

planthelper Posted March 27, 2006 (edited) very impressive haul! i wished i had a big one like yours, lol. i know you from thenook, didn't know you are member here aswell, good to see you in this forum. btw (about your avatar at the other forum), cacti should not be used as a costume, the circumstance that you grow cacti to maturety and than wear them as a hallowen disguise is very strange indeed. they are made to be eaten, not worn, lol. strangebrew Posted March 27, 2006 I will also post a picture of the 3 different type tips together. They are quite distinct. Looking forward to seeing that and also the end result. I'd be interested in knowing if there is much if any core width differences too.

Rev Posted March 27, 2006 (edited) Nice motherlode but why such big cuttings? you arent getting the most of your material best of luck making hedges is very satisfying Edited March 27, 2006 by Rev
Osprey Posted March 27, 2006 This is where I'm at now.I cut the tips to 20" and the mid sections to 6-8". I'm seriously considering cutting all the tips down to 13" which would give me another 20 motherplants. Should I do it????What do you think Rev? The closeup shows left to right,B01,T.Baker,&SS02.The cores look pretty much the same
Gunter Posted March 27, 2006 Very cool! You are one of my favorite cacti growers.
Osprey Posted March 27, 2006 (edited) Thanks Archaea, you're no slouch yourself! I guess I could really go nuts and cut the 20" tips into thirds. That would give me 40 more mothers. That seems pretty radical though. I'm 50 now,I might not live long enough to see my hedge. Edited March 27, 2006 by Osprey
kakti Posted March 27, 2006 Awesome Osprey...you definitely have a knack for cactus growing, and finding the best clones to propagate If you ever want a helper to give you a hand in planting, just give me a hollar
Gunter Posted March 27, 2006 It sounds keen, maybe keep most long and do a few of the short ones for planting in between the taller ones?
Tripitaka Posted March 27, 2006 Hey Osprey, Nice haul, are you an Australian grower??

Osprey Posted March 27, 2006 Well I'm done cutting. Final tally from 7 plants: 20-13" tips 41-6-8" mid-cuts 7-Rooted bases I'm in the US.Pacific Northwest
Rev Posted March 28, 2006 (edited) ok thats a respectable number now you can do 70 foot of hedge or plant the tips as one section of a hedge and plant the stem cuts in a breeder bed to farm pups for the hedge i would allow them to callus well then plant direct into the soil they really pick up in the ground often i find the original column doesnr grow that fast but the pups that arise near the base out grow in height and diameter the mother stem heres a pach fence i started as an experiment i planted in April 2005 and by september when we left the place the cacti were fattened up and were 1/2 to 2/3 up the fence. the interplants are Cowpeas, parsley and habanero chilli i dont have a front fence to use here so i havent done it again but im lookingforward to installing more in the future not just pachs but all other trich species, and stenocereus any cactus that growns nice n straight when close set with bridge id be paying special attention to good drainage Edited March 28, 2006 by Rev
Osprey Posted March 28, 2006 (edited) sorry double post Edited March 28, 2006 by Osprey
Osprey Posted March 28, 2006 I'm going to use the mid-cuts to farm pups.Another thing I need to figure out is a realistic spacing to allow enough space for mature plants.I was thinking of 2 rows staggered I would think you would want a bare minimum of 2 ft between them Maybe 3 ft. is more realistic More space would allow more natural looking ,wider branching Although planting them closer would make a really nice impenetrable clusterfuck of branches
BlackDragon Posted March 29, 2006 depends how dense you want that hedge. For the farming look at around 2 foot spacing all round with a two staggered rows seem to work well. Then leave a walking space, then continue rows if you have enough. bridgesii tend to branch around 2-3 feet wide till really mature... by then you'll be cutting more for more farming anyways hope that made sense..... BlackDragon Posted March 30, 2006 (edited) Clusterfucking is good -_- , but will blemish the skin through spiking . spiking causes calus(or infection) ,calus makes skin harder to remove making your job harder and more time consuming ... Unblemished skin is so peeerty and easy to remove, if thats your thang. Edited March 30, 2006 by BlackDragon
