Ashoka Posted December 15, 2005 Greetings corroborants, I'm posting this for a user on another board who asked if the cactus below is a Trichocereus, I don't believe it is.. But here it is: Thanks, Ash
Evil Genius Posted December 15, 2005 I strongly doubt this being Trichocereus. Maybe it could be some Lemaireocereus or Pachycereus, i´m not pretty familiar with these. I lately received a lemaireocereus which looks similar but i also saw such or similar spination on Pachycereus. Maybe someone else can go more in detail about the ID. faslimy Posted December 15, 2005 looks like Pachycereus pecten-aboriginum
Ashoka Posted December 15, 2005 Faslimy I think you're spot on! Thanks!
Pisgah Posted December 15, 2005 I don't know about pachycereus. Looks like stenocereus to me. In fact, it look a lot like the stenocereus hystrix I had before it crapped out and rotted. Is Isla de Margarita on the carribean side? Stenocereus would make more sense if that is the case.
Ashoka Posted December 15, 2005 Pisgah> Perhaps you're right, but then these folks here: http://www.cactustropicalgarden.com/photos/cactus/0048.html are wrong. Isla de Margarita is on the caribbean side.
strangebrew Posted December 16, 2005 Pachycereus pecten-aboriginum is a cactus from NthWst Mexico and an image search yields quite varying results. The Isla de Margarita is just off the coast of Venezuela so I think Stenocereus is the most likely.
faslimy Posted December 16, 2005 I agree, I think that website has the ID wrong and it looks like a typical Stenocereus. Pachycereus pectin is described as having a trunk and you can see that growth habit is not geared up for that. I had that image on my computer and it was the first thing I saw, nicely labeled as Pachycereus.
Pisgah Posted December 17, 2005 Yeah, I'm always hesitant to doubt the veracity of someone else's ID, but that link was to a picture of a Stenocereus. Maybe someone who was new there got the tags mixed up
Ashoka Posted December 17, 2005 Thanks guys. So the bottom line is that the specimen in question is a Stenocereus hystrix.
mr toodly Posted December 17, 2005 This looks exactly like the species I spotted in Oaxaca. You can find better pictures in my Oaxaca thread.
mr toodly Posted December 17, 2005 Nevermind. My memory hasn't served me. http://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/inde...1&st=&p=entry This seems to be some Pacyhcereus species. I think it might have been subsumed by Stenocereus recently.
