Shulgin: Ecstasy 'has great potential'

http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200512/s1522863.htm

The US scientist who introduced ecstasy to the world in the 1970s says he fears the drug's notoriety and popularity at nightclubs is destroying any chance that it might be used to treat the mentally ill.

Speaking at a conference at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Alexander Shulgin, also known as 'Dr Ecstasy', told his audience he still believed the drug had great potential as a medicine.

The biochemist unearthed a formula for MDMA in a 1912 chemistry text and synthesised it into ecstasy in 1976.

The drug was used in its early days as a treatment for depression and other illnesses, but that ended abruptly in 1986 when it was banned by the US Drug Enforcement Agency.

Earlier this year Australia's National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre warned that ecstasy users risked harmful psychological effects.

You can get harmful psychological effects form anything you abuse, nothing is without risk, i think you'll find the majority of users dont abuse it in the way that you owuld need ot get harmfull effects form it.

I belive it has great potential in medicine, after reading pihkal, you really get to know where mdma has really been and alot more abnout it potential for medicine, it is really a shame that the "war on drugs"has put such a slnder on relativley harmless chemicals with such medicinal potential.

What a poorly written and researched article. :ana:

Sasha did not work for Dell (is there even a chemical company by that name??), but rather for Dow.

He did not synthesize MDMA from the 1912 german patent, but rather he methylated MDA and then later found out the compound had previously been patented. Also, patents are not regarded a 'chemical texts'.

He is also not know as Dr Ecstasy. There was a recent newspaper article where that phrase was mentioned - probably for the first time- and this author simply copied it.

What is great news is the release of the new book. 1000 psychoactive compounds listed similarly to the Merck Index. What an excellent idea :worship::worship:

He worked for Dole and then he went and became a consultant after he left them. But i agree this article is very porrly written and researched, its nothing but an attempt to slander a brilliant chemist because his views dont fit in with the ignorant public's media generated opinions. This new book sounds very interesting, name?

LOL, Dole is a fictitious name Sasha used in his books. The real company he worked for was Dow.

ie, Sura worked for Dole, Sasha worked for Dow :P
