Torsten Posted November 14, 2005 I can tell some by taste, but the differences are too subtle to even try to explain. Where did you get it from - that might be a good clue.

Torsten Posted November 14, 2005 Adelaide has : Ephedra fragilis Ephedra fragilis ssp. campylopoda Ephedra intermedia var. persica Ephedra regeliana I don't think any of these contain ephedrine and I don't think they even contain much pseudoephedrine. To be honest I know nothing about E.regeliana though
Gunter Posted November 14, 2005 What are the species of interest?
Torsten Posted November 14, 2005 off the top of my head: major, distachya (helvetica), gerardiana, sinensis
Caldeye Posted November 14, 2005 ...Ephedra intermedia var. persica ... I don't think any of these contain ephedrine and I don't think they even contain much pseudoephedrine. ... I have an old source ("Herbs of Tadjikistan", 1989) that states that E. intermedia fresh herb contains around 0.5-3.1% alkaloids, 70-95% of which is pseudoephedrine. But you can see a pic with three species. -E. nebrodensis(=E. major). yellow berries. -E. dystacha. red berries. -E. fragilis, grey stems. I hope that help you in your ID. ;).
