wandjina Posted October 26, 2005 I didnt think there were other leonard cohen fans here? hell yeah! Cohen and Dylan are my favourite lyricists. The rest of my my music collection is also dated. Talking of dated, anyone remember this? (no googling now...) Deep inside the forest Is a door into another land Here is our life and home We are staying, here forever In the beauty of this place all alone We keep on hop-in' Maybe There's a world where we don't have to run And maybe There's a time we'll call our own Livin' free in harmony and majesty Take me ho-ome Take me home Walkin' through the land Where every living thing is beautiful Why does it have to end We are calling, oh so sadly On the whispers of the wind As we send a dying message Maybe There's a world where we don't have to ru-un Maybe There's a time we'll call our own Livin' free in harmony and majesty Take me ho-ome Take me home used to make me cry as a kid
Green Osiris Posted October 26, 2005 A TV show, wandjina ? Which reminds me of the m*a*s*h theme song, never lyricised in the series, but I believe was on the original film with don sutherland... SUICIDE IS PAINLESS Through early morning fog I see visions of the things to be the pains that are withheld for me I realize and I can see... that suicide is painless It brings on many changes and I can take or leave it if I please. I try to find a way to make all our little joys relate without that ever-present hate but now I know that it's too late, and... The game of life is hard to play I'm gonna lose it anyway The losing card I'll someday lay so this is all I have to say. The only way to win is cheat And lay it down before I'm beat and to another give my seat for that's the only painless feat. The sword of time will pierce our skins It doesn't hurt when it begins The pain grows stronger...watch it grin, but... A brave man once requested me to answer questions that are key is it to be or not to be and I replied 'oh why ask me?' 'Cause suicide is painless it brings on many changes and I can take or leave it if I please. ...and you can do the same thing if you please. ...makes G.O. sad & reflective
2b Posted October 26, 2005 LOL, funny that. i know leonard cohen and NWA! now theres a mix. 2B- speaking of showin age, you ever heard that rap metal group "Body Count"? Holding a copy in my hand right now !!! and it' s the one that''s got Cop Killer on it !! , can you believe it was withdrawn from sale and re-released without it ? Surely it's gotta be collectable by now ? As for the rest well Dylan , Pixies ,Sonic Youth , Smiths , Motor head , Sepultura , Nirvana , Janes Addiction , Tom Waits , it just goes on with out reason !!Shelves of the stuff , like a trail of my past lives. Lately I've discovered classical music and have been taking some time to relax , prolly a good thing as i recently had a week off work stress related. My blood pressure was 145/95 and the doctor told me slow down and relax or i would end up in trouble. Two weeks later it's 120/78 so the classical must have done the trick. Wandjina , it seems familiar but i can't put my finger on it. But then so did the lyrics to ' Magic' and i never would have guessed it.
wandjina Posted October 27, 2005 the song is 'Maybe', the theme from The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams. not sure who sang it....still brings a tear to my eye As for the rest well Dylan , Pixies ,Sonic Youth , Smiths , Motor head , Sepultura , Nirvana , Janes Addiction , Tom Waits , that 's a good part of my collection you're listing! Pixies...oh yeah. Doolittle is one of my fave albums of all time Smiths...great lyrics and lurve that melancholy pop sound and black humour... Classical...which composers? if you havn't already, check out Satie and Faure. highly recommended, and the label NAXOS has good CDs for $10 a pop I can't get enough ska at the moment.... You're working at your leisure to learn the things you'll need The promises you make tomorrow carry no guarantee I've seen your qualifications, you got a Ph.D. I've got one art O-level, it did nothing for me Working for the rat race You know you're wasting your time Working for the rat race You're no friend of mine You plan your conversation to impress the college bar Just talking about your mother and daddy's Jaguar Wear your political T-shirt and sacred college scarf Discussing the world situation, but just for a laugh You'll be working for the rat race You know you're wasting your time Working for the rat race You're no friend of mine Working for the rat race You know you're wasting your time Working for the rat race You're no friend of mine Just working at your leisure to learn the things you don't need The promises you make tomorrow carry no guarantee I've seen your qualifications, you got a Ph.D. I've got one art O-level, it did nothing for me Working for the rat race You know you're wasting your time You're working for the rat race You're no friend of mine
-YT- Posted October 27, 2005 Top song awesome lyrics Triple J were playing it a few weeks ago :D Oxygen - Willy Mason I wanna be better than oxygen So you can breathe when you're drowning and weak in the knees I wanna speak louder than Ritalin For all the children who think that they've got a disease I wanna be cooler than t.v. For all the kids that are wondering what they are going to be We can be stronger than bombs If you're singing along and you know that you really believe We can be richer than industry As long as we know that there's things that we don't really need We can speak louder than ignorance Cause we speak in silence every time our eyes meet. On and on, and on, and on it goes The world it just keeps spinning Until i'm dizzy, time to breathe So close my eyes and start again anew. I wanna see through all the lies of society To the reality, happiness is at stake I wanna hold up my head with dignity Proud of a life where to give means more than to take I wan't to live beyond the modern mentality Where paper is all that you're really taught to create Do you remember the forgotten America? Justice, equality, freedom to every race? Just need to get past all the lies and hypocrisy Make up and hair to the truth behind every face That look around to all the people you see, How many of them are happy and free? I know it sounds like a dream But it's the only thing that can get me to sleep at night I know it's hard to believe But it's easy to see that something here isn't right I know the future looks dark But it's there that the kids of today must carry the light. On and on, and on, and on it goes The world it just keeps spinning Until i'm dizzy, time to breathe So close my eyes and start again anew. If i'm afraid to catch a dream I weave your baskets and i'll float them down the river stream Each one i weave with words i speak to carry love to your relief. Evil Genius Posted October 27, 2005 Immortal Technique - The Poverty of Philosophy Most of my Latino and black people who are struggling to get food, clothes and shelter in the hood are so concerned with that, that philosophising about freedom and socialist democracy is usually unfortunately beyond their rationale. They don't realize that America can't exist without separating them from their identity, because if we had some sense of who we really are, there's no way in hell we'd allow this country to push it's genocidal consensus on our homelands. This ignorance exists, but it can be destroyed. Nigga talk about change and working within the system to achieve that. The problem with always being a conformist is that when you try to change the system from within, it's not you who changes the system; it's the system that will eventually change you. There is usually nothing wrong with compromise in a situation, but compromising yourself in a situation is another story completely, and I have seen this happen long enough in the few years that I've been alive to know that it's a serious problem. Latino America is a huge colony of countries whose presidents are cowards in the face of economic imperialism. You see, third world countries are rich places, abundant in resources, and many of these countries have the capacity to feed their starving people and the children we always see digging for food in trash on commercials. But plutocracies, in other words a government run by the rich such as this one and traditionally oppressive European states, force the third world into buying overpriced, unnecessary goods while exporting huge portions of their natural resources. I'm quite sure that people will look upon my attitude and sentiments and look for hypocrisy and hatred in my words. My revolution is born out of love for my people, not hatred for others. You see, most of Latinos are here because of the great inflation that was caused by American companies in Latin America. Aside from that, many are seeking a life away from the puppet democracies that were funded by the United States; places like El Salvador, Guatemala, Peru, Columbia, Nicaragua, Ecuador and Republica Dominicana, and not just Spanish-speaking countries either, but Haiti and Jamaica as well. As different as we have been taught to look at each other by colonial society, we are in the same struggle and until we realize that, we'll be fighting for scraps from the table of a system that has kept us subservient instead of being self-determined. And that's why we have no control over when the embargo will stop in Cuba, or when the bombs will stop dropping in Vieques. But you see, here in America the attitude that is fed to us is that outside of America there live lesser people. "Fuck them, let them fend for themselves." No, Fuck you, they are you. No matter how much you want to dye your hair blonde and put fake eyes in, or follow an anorexic standard of beauty, or no matter how many diamonds you buy from people who exploit your own brutally to get them, no matter what kind of car you drive or what kind of fancy clothes you put on, you will never be them. They're always gonna look at you as nothing but a little monkey. I'd rather be proud of what I am, rather than desperately trying to be something I'm really not, just to fit in. And whether we want to accept it or not, that's what this culture or lack of culture is feeding us. I want a better life for my family and for my children, but it doesn't have to be at the expense of millions of lives in my homeland. We're given the idea that if we didn't have these people to exploit then America wouldn't be rich enough to let us have these little petty material things in our lives and basic standards of living. No, that's wrong. It's the business giants and the government officials who make all the real money. We have whatever they kick down to us. My enemy is not the average white man, it's not the kid down the block or the kids I see on the street; my enemy is the white man I don't see: the people in the white house, the corporate monopoly owners, fake liberal politicians those are my enemies. The generals of the armies that are mostly conservatives those are the real Mother-Fuckers that I need to bring it to, not the poor, broke country-ass soldier that's too stupid to know shit about the way things are set up. In fact, I have more in common with most working and middle-class white people than I do with most rich black and Latino people. As much as racism bleeds America, we need to understand that classism is the real issue. Many of us are in the same boat and it's sinking, while these bougie Mother-Fuckers ride on a luxury liner, and as long as we keep fighting over kicking people out of the little boat we're all in, we're gonna miss an opportunity to gain a better standard of living as a whole. In other words, I don't want to escape the plantation I want to come back, free all my people, hang the Mother-Fucker that kept me there and burn the house to the god damn ground. I want to take over the encomienda and give it back to the people who work the land. You cannot change the past but you can make the future, and anyone who tells you different is a Fucking lethargic devil. I don't look at a few token Latinos and black people in the public eye as some type of achievement for my people as a whole. Most of those successful individuals are sell-outs and house Negros. But, I don't consider brothers a sell-out if they move out of the ghetto. Poverty has nothing to do with our people. It's not in our culture to be poor. That's only been the last 500 years of our history; look at the last 2000 years of our existence and what we brought to the world in terms of science, mathematics, agriculture and forms of government. You know the idea of a confederation of provinces where one federal government controls the states? The Europeans who came to this country stole that idea from the Iroquois lead. The idea of impeaching a ruler comes from an Aztec tradition. That's why Montezuma was stoned to death by his own people 'cause he represented the agenda of white Spaniards once he was captured, not the Aztec people who would become Mexicans. So in conclusion, I'm not gonna vote for anybody just 'cause they black or Latino they have to truly represent the community and represent what's good for all of us proletariat. Viva la revolution! Green Osiris Posted October 28, 2005 So there's been some band-name dropping here, I'de love to know what some of you are into, as I am an avid music head myself, and not particularly prone to new fads & trends(some call me a 'music snob' cos I think modern commercial pop/rock/alterno is crap), but at the same time like to keep a progressive interest in the 'new', whilst maintaining some of the 'old' and 'very old'. Age would also be interesting, if you're comfy with that (GO is 34). I'll start the ball rolling, not particularly all-time faves, but more so the top 10 recent purchases you are loving/rekindled passions/recent great gigs/top current bands/old CD's that you've just discovered etc. For me, In no particular order: GONG: Part 1 of the "Flying Teapot" trilogy (my first intro to this band, two weeks ago, I love it! NOT one for the conventionally minded) DREAM THEATRE: Scenes From A Memory (shit, why haven’t I found these guys until only recently!) MAHAVISHNU JOHN McLAUCHLAN & SANTANA: Love, Devotion, Surrender (very cool, very chilled) OZRIC TENTACLES: Eternal Wheel (see above statement on DT, also my personal obsession for last 3 months, GREAT, no THE BEST soundtrack to Sal.D journeys for me) WOLFMOTHER: Live Shows - ep is crap, but new album out soon. (Gaelic Club, @Newtown - fanstastic old school late 60's styled heavy sludge rock with a big-ass hammond sound) See some of you next Friday at the Metro? COG: JV1, JV2, New Normal, Live shows (have to pinch myself to confirm Im not dreaming while I am in trance-like state with Borich's unique time sigs & 'in-between' fills) QUINTESSENCE: In Blissful Company & Self Titled (second) album (everything I love in a rock/jazz/eastern fusion crossover band, and a style I would be doing if I were able to play) RADIOHEAD: Kid A (Such delicate obscurity, nice for late night, post trip, chill out sessions) SANTANA: First two albums from Carlos & Co (very groovy sounds from the Woodstock era) IRON MAIDEN: Piece of Mind (sic) (reminds me of why I shunned commercial pop as a teen, and got into some great metal musicianship, albiet cock-rock) JETHRO TULL: Live at the Enmore earlier this year (as a massive fan of JT's work between 67-75, but disliking material after this time, I was wonderfully surprised at their vibrant live performance- they are the kings! No indication of 'hoary ol’ chestnuts’ in for a final few $$ by playing weak renditions of the ‘classics’ - I should clarify that only Anderson & Barre remain from early line-up) Hmmm, my 'bands of the now' could extend to way beyond a mere ten (yea, I can't count), but as these were the first that sprang to mind, I'm locking it in. But I should also make a quick reference to Ravi Shankar, The Mars Volta, the Grand Silent System, Tool, Abdou-Khalil, vintage Queen, System of a Down, Tim Buckley, Cat Stevens, The Datsuns and on and on and on….... sheesh my music listening time each week FAR outweighs my TV watching or my compooter surfing, so there's always been a wide selection of stuff - the above list does not, in any way, represent my 'all time faves', or even any other bands that I love immensely, but is more a quick picture of what is played most right now in the house of Osiris ! caludia Posted October 28, 2005 can't say any lyrics have changed my life, but certain tunes have! i remember the first time i heard my favourite tunes as if they were the first times i'd ever seen the colour "blue" or tasted a staple flavour like "chocolate" or "vanilla". i used to think tunes were somehow immortal or ex-temporal "discoveries" (like they pre-existed, like platonic mathematics or something).. but now i just think that my attachment to tunes is a reflection of my commonality with the tune-makers and with my fellow humans. it's a human thing i reckon... anyway these lyrics kept springing into my mind over the last few days, for various reasons not worth mentioning ;) "True Faith" I feel so extraordinary Something's got a hold on me I get this feeling I'm in motion A sudden sense of liberty I don't care cos I'm not there I don't care if I'm here tomorrow Again and again I've taken too much Of the things that cost you too much I used to think that the day would never come I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun My morning sun is the drug that brings me near To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear I used to think that the day would never come That my life would depend on the morning sun When I was a very small boy, Very small boys talked to me Now that we've grown up together They're afraid of what they see That's the price that we all pay A valued destiny comes to nothing I can't tell you where we're going I guess there's just no way of knowing I used to think that the day would never come I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun My morning sun is the drug that brings me near To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear I used to think that the day would never come That my life would depend on the morning sun I feel so extraordinary Something's got a hold on me I get this feeling I'm in motion A sudden sense of liberty The chances are we've gone too far You took my time and you took my money Now I feel you've left me standing In a world that's so demanding I used to think that the day would never come I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun My morning sun is the drug that brings me near To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear I used to think that the day would never come That my life would depend on the morning sun couple o' edits - this next song has no relevance to my life apart from its intensity and beauty..., but since this thread is about lyrics, thought i'd blab ;) it is a clever song (like lots of kate bush songs) that stems from a popular misconception that Houdini died during one of his "tricks". it is done from the point of view of houdini's wife Bess. it is complex because Bess simultaneously expresses love and anger towards her dead husband. the phrase "rosabel believe" is what houdini told his wife that he would say through an occult medium, if he ever survived. Houdini believed mediums were frauds, so he devised an unusual phrase which would prove to Bess that he was in an afterlife. It is hard to tell whether Bess believes this or not, in the song... ambiguous.. the bit about the "key" is because many of houdini's underwater strait-jacket feats were accomplished by Bess passing him the key to the locks and chains on her tongue when she "kissed him goodbye". anyway i have often thought this song would make a great dance song..! has a wonderful mystical beat bit in the chorus which could be extended over the whole song by a dj! "Houdini" by Kate Bush I wait at the table, And hold hands with weeping strangers, Wait for you To join the group. The tambourine jingle-jangles. The medium roams and rambles. Not taken in, I break the circle. I want this man To go away now. With a kiss I'd pass the key And feel your tongue Teasing and receiving. With your spit Still on my lip, You hit the water. Him and I in the room To prove you are with us too. He's using code that only you and I know. This is no trick of his. This is your magic. I'd catch the cues, Watching you, Hoping you'd do something wrong. Everybody thinks you'll never make it, But every time, You escape: 'Rosabel believe, Not even eternity Can hold Houdini!' "Rosabel, believe!" Through the glass I'd watch you breathe. ("Not even eternity--") Bound and drowned, And paler than you've ever been. ("--will hold Houdini!") With your life The only thing in my mind-- We pull you from the water! (Houdini!) You ("Hou-di-ni...") And I And Rosabel believe. also wanjina i am a big bowie fan too "Should I believe that I've been stricken? Does my face show some kind of glow? It's too late - to be grateful It's too late - to be late again It's too late - to be hateful The european canon is here!"
Evil Genius Posted October 28, 2005 Yeah, it´s a pretty cool underground track but actually it rather is spoken word mixed with instrumental than a real song. I like it as it is very minimalistic. It´s on Revolutionary Vol.1. Most of the text doesn´t affect me pretty much as i´m european but i like it though. Not sure why.

Green Osiris Posted November 4, 2005 Really don't mind if you sit this one out. My word's but a whisper your deafness a shout. I may make you feel but I can't make you think. Your sperm's in the gutter your love's in the sink. (da da da dah dah dah dahm do dee do dee do de-dedee....etc ) So you ride yourselves over the fields and you make all your animal deals and your wise men don't know how it feels....................... to be thick as a brick. And the sand-castle virtues are all swept away in the tidal destruction the moral melee. The elastic retreat rings the close of play as the last wave uncovers the newfangled way. But your new shoes are worn at the heels and your suntan does rapidly peel and your wise men don't know how it feels .. (eh , eh de dee - de deeeehhhh,....) to be thick as a brick. wandjina Posted July 20, 2006 shit...is this thread really that old? My sense of time has gone all wobbly. anyhoo...planning on recording a cover of this Bowie song, love the lyrics and melody: "Quicksand" I'm closer to the Golden Dawn Immersed in Crowley's uniform Of imagery I'm living in a silent film Portraying Himmler's sacred realm Of dream reality I'm frightened by the total goal Drawing to the ragged hole And I ain't got the power anymore No I ain't got the power anymore I'm the twisted name on Garbo's eyes Living proof of Churchill's lies I'm destiny I'm torn between the light and dark Where others see their targets Divine symmetry Should I kiss the viper's fang Or herald loud the death of Man I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thoughts And I ain't got the power anymore Don't believe in yourself Don't deceive with belief Knowledge comes with death's release I'm not a prophet or a stone age man Just a mortal with potential of a superman I'm living on I'm tethered to the logic of Homo Sapien Can't take my eyes from the great salvation Of bullshit faith If I don't explain what you ought to know You can tell me all about it On the next Bardo I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thoughts And I ain't got the power anymore Don't believe in yourself Don't deceive with belief Knowledge comes with death's release
