What's the largest sub specimen?

Recommended Posts

Found a monster sub today, accidentally picked it innocently trying to ID what the hell this large blob was (seriously). Am fairly annoyed as it would have been interesting to see how big it could have been at maturity. It's still stem under the dirt in the pic, but getting more a mycelial stub towards the last .5cm

It's body was completey beneath the barkchips/leaf litter mostly horizontally, with the young cap sticking out(veil just slightly broken). It's 11.5cm long(stringline), and stem width between 1 - 1.5cm in the thickest. The picture doesn't do it any justice, and sorry for the dodgyness of it, blurry and dark, tried to lighten it in photoshop.

So yeah, what's the largest subaeruginosa specimen people have found? This one felt like what a fresh veil intact cube would, snakes solidly from palm up your wrist.

There was a small area down in the Valley where it wasn't unusual to find the occassional freaky-ass fucker that had a cap width <10cm. These things were chunky, really unusual for SA. They looked quite different to their younger brethren but if you searched straight downhill, there were always smaller, normal looking ones to be found. Man, I wish I was into taking photo's in those days!

One day after finding a good haul, including a couple of these, I went around to a mates place and had them all spread out on newspaper to dry out a bit. There was this older big biker dude there and later on as he was leaving he just helped himself to the biggest one, the biggest I'd ever found, saying "Right, I'll take that one for a print!" Fucking arsehole.

The thing was, a week or two later I heard he was picked up by the police that night as he was driving home as he was known to them and he got busted for having the shroom! :D :D :D

Karma baby, karma!

I will be going there in the summer to pull out all the blackberry type stuff. its chocking the life outta that place must be only half the walking space as there was years ago. Hey that new army built bridge didn't last very long haha

Ahhh, the assumptions we make.

That pic was from a forum camping trip. due to the need for easy access and facilities, that spot was chosen.

Personally, I drive a landcruiser, and my idea of camping (and bush-walking) has nothing to do with man made picnic areas and walking-paths. NO rubbish was left behind on the trip where the pic was taken. I cart more people's rubbish out of the bush than I've ever brought in.

Now that I'd like to see. Post some pics when you're finished.

Good to hear, sorry didn't mean to imply you were a filthy litter bug.

Bush walking in plantaion is not ideal though still make for a good trip. Better than the burbs.

I will post the pics in the summer.

Good to hear there are monsters everywhere, it would be interesting to document info about the larger specimens or any other one of interest. Is it just a freak thing, or possibly nutritional influence, environmental...

Great pic ED, interesting character it's has.

Strangebrew, with all luck, hopefully the one he took was sterile hehe, bad luck man.

Bundy, if you hang around the forum long enough you'll realise the people here don't trash the environment ??

Anyhoo, I don't know how much you know about weed removal, online forums leave too much to the imagination. But please be aware that blackberry is a staged removal weed over many years, mass clearings just encourage further colonisation of unwanted plants, it creates more problems for the people down the line. All the best mate. :)

Gerbil

I don't know much about weed removal, the only times I’ve done it publicly was 'bone seed' removal in scouts many many years ago. I was just going to cut 'em back and try and rip out as much roots as possible then have a Bundy & burn it all up. I know the blackberry type stuff resprouts from the roots but i don't really want to poison it. I figure its got to be better than nothing. Any better suggestions are welcome.

I am new hear (i found this place because a border killed my lovely lophs) so i don't what kind of people come hear. Good to see its not just kids wanting to get off.

HAH what beauties!!! thanks for all the porn people. :D

hey good to see you 'round vfx, i can smell those glistening ones from here :P

howdy bundy, best bit of advice i can give imo, is to go and talk to the land managers of the area, they will have a plan of weed control, and i'd imagine some could get pretty cranky when people come in and do their own weed control without sticking to the management plan that is in place, like i said, alot of the time removal will make things harder for further weed removal in the future.
