Torsten Posted October 23, 2003 Originally posted by planthelper: happy to see that the term "frosty pink", which i think, i created is getting hold. Sorry to burst your bubble, but 'Frosty Pink' has been around for ages. It is a cultivar derived from a white B.suaveolens crossed with the pink suaveolens, resulting in a flower which is white at the base and pink at the corolla tips, with the rest blending into each other. One colour or the other is usually dominant, but this is also affected by tempreature, soil and various other factors. The Frosty Pink by Greenhouse is grown from seed I imported, which was a cross between two strains sold as frosty pinks, but which were nonetheless compatible. Spurious Posted October 24, 2003 Would THIS method of breeding a new strain, be considered applicable to most species ? [ 23. October 2003, 19:46: Message edited by: Spurious ]
Torsten Posted October 24, 2003 yep, that's pretty much how its done. But if you are breeding for a specific trait then you will also need to take the dominant or recessive nature of that trait into account and select particularly your F1 & F2 parents accordingly. keep in mind that your F1 will look very uniform due to masking of recessives, and that real selection isn't really possible till the recessives recombine in F2. In fact, if breeding for certain traits (especially recessive ones) you will find that F1 is quite useless and in such a case it may pay to add another generation (f7) to stabilise the strain. basically, if you follow the chart and stay single minded about the trait you are going for for the full 6 generations (without straying from your original goal), then you should do OK.
