Torsten Posted June 18, 2004 Does your pee stink (to your nose) after eating asparagus? (note, if your pee stinks to someone else, but not to you then you must answer 'no')

Hagakure Posted June 19, 2004 i think this is one of the most tested genetic phenotypes. people dont mind if you tell them that they have the gene for smelling asparagus pee but would get pretty mad if you told them they had some genetic defect.
planthelper Posted June 19, 2004 yes, it does. but more important my pee smelled very strong of pituri, after indigesting it by the quid & ash methode.
coin Posted June 19, 2004 i checked "yes it stinks" meaning i can detect the odour within 30 minutes after eating them, but i don't think it smells all that bad? but then, i'm not too adverse to imbibing some fresh urine every now and then, but that's a whole other thread, as they say

mescalito Posted June 20, 2004 Dr Karl from Radio national and JJJ reckons it's the Ammonia content of asparagus that gives ya pee it's tang.

Rev Posted June 21, 2004 I can smell it but dont find it offensive I think this applies to many things for me For example i love the earthy smell of herbivore shit n the sweet smell of composted muck ahh the smell of mushroom food I think i can even detect how delicious it is for the shrooms by smell and feel I dont find this gross at all I find the Perfume section in a departmnet store or Air 'freshener' to be more repulsive [ 21. coin Posted June 21, 2004 lol, a little from column A, a little from column B (A: mine, morning mid-stream + a big pinch of tinospora cordifolia starch, from a glass, few days in a row, B: someone else, more directly & more of a body wash & only in the shower cos i'm fussy & hate cleaning) neither is frequent never sampled & so never had to stipulate no asparagus, but coffee & energy drinks make things quite yuck (but then i hate how coffee smells through someone's skin *shudder* i think it reminds me of my dad) hehe can't believe i'm saying that..is there a PG rating here? been away for a while
devance Posted June 25, 2004 I ate two pounds of fresh boiled asparagus long ago that permanently impressed me with the urine stench. But have never been able to reproduce the event when I have eaten fresh boiled asparagus and have always wondered about the biochemical dynamics.
Guest Mortph-man Posted June 28, 2004 It's not so much ammonia, as I understand it, but sulphur-containing compounds - thiols or mercaptans, incidentally also a problem in winemaking (though I don't know of anyone having asparagus-piss after drinking Sauvignon Blanc!). The body is very efficient at disposing of sulphur compounds excess to its needs, which effectively are low-level toxins. Incidentally, I have the "green-pee" gene & prefer well-ventilated facilities after indulging...
Skulking Lurker Posted June 28, 2004 Asparagine L-Asparagine is a neutral, genetically coded amino acid. Most authorities feel that the compound that causes the odor in urine after consumption of asparagus is methylmercaptan, which is a sulfur-containing derivative of the amino acid, methionine. This is disputed by a few individuals who claim that the odiferous compound is asparagine-amino-succinic-acid monoamide.
