Recommended Posts

I am curious if anyone can list all genuses of succulents which have carrion scented flowers.

I know there is Stapelia and Hoodia but I am curious if there are others.

Stapelia flavopurpurea is the only species (to my knowledge) that smells like honey to attract bees. All others have the appearance and fragrance of rotting flesh to atract flies, which then lay eggs in the flower and spread the pollen in the proccess.

One interesting thing about the Asclepiadaceae family is that they can be grafted to each other, much like the Cactaceae. There are some amazing species within that family, including the very rare Pseudolithos and Whitsloanea. There are some species with insanely beautiful flowers, most notably in the Huernia and Carraluma genera, but there are many others. And most of them use flies as their main polinators.

I like the Edithcolea grandis a lot and similar looking ones if anyone can suggest any like this. The patterns are remarkable. I will do some research tonight also.

I like Huernia marcocarpa v. schweinfurthii.

What would you normally use as a grafting stock for these.

I am curious with the other genuses if there any that smell good like Stapelia flavorpurea and Stapelia erectiflora
