Question

I purchased this specific cactus online and received 8 cuttings, it was labelled as a san pedro but I am not 100% convinced and would like a second opinion. :) All the cuttings were damaged during shipping because they were all thrown in a box together and scraped each other up pretty good but they all survived!

These were apparently all columnar cuts off a crested specimen but not sure if it's genetic or possibly just cause by damage. It has pretty short spines and is definitely not a PC pachanoi... Possibly torch but probably true pedro?

Anyways here's some pics, really nice blue hue and has some reddish/amber looking spines growing at the tip turning to a grey/brown. A few different cuttings in the pictures:

Hi Bot6! That was Cuzcoensis but it´s absolutely not reliable since there are countless Intermediates and Varieties. In many cases, it´s true. This plant is a pretty good Example. It may be related to Cuzcoensis but most Taxonomists would place it in Peruvianus.

So short spined peruvianus... isn't that supposed to just be a real deal pachanoi anyways? :)

I had read through all the stickies at the top and read something mentioned about the "plus sign" on the cuzcoensis thread but these definitely aren't that so believe it to be false, also the other one isn't a plus at all since it has less ribs...

I think the plus sign thing is totally dependent on the amount of ribs and also if all of the ribs are touching in the center at all time or if only half are touching at any given time. Kind of like you said djmattz0r. If there is 8 ribs and it throws out 4 at a time then it will make a plus sign. But like this it has 6 ribs and it's only throwing half out at time it will have a triangular kind of shape to it rather than the plus sign. I know that some columnars don't do the thing where you see half of the ribs touching at the tip at the same time. They have all of them constantly touching rather than reverting back and forth. I'm not sure if I'm explaining it well. It's hard to put into words. Here are some pictures.

With this you can see that only 4 of them are touching and 3 of them aren't at the tip. So it's making a plus sign, then when the other three are touching it will make a triangle type sign.

This one has all the ribs touching in the center at all times. I've heard that this is a characteristic of scopulicola.

Anyways, point is that the shape it makes in the center isn't a valid way to ID a cactus imo.

+1 lol

I don't really understand what's funny about that. Maybe you thought I meant the first picture was a scopulicola. I was talking about the second one.

Btw, it wasn´t really directed towards anything you wrote in your post because i generally disregard the concept of using plus signs in Cactus Taxonomy. I was trying to make a humorous attempt by using +1 in order to say that the cactus in the Picture is a Stenocereus. Of course cacti grow and drop Ribs and hence look more or less like a plus sign. Anyone who´s interested in Columnar cacti should be aware of that. The Rib Structure of Cuzcoensis increases the Plus Effect though. Means the "claim" of being able to use that Trait to properly ID a Cuzcoensis isn't entirely based on the number of ribs alone but also the rib structure. But like I said, it´s a waste of time because it´s not reliable, so I tried not to get involved in deeper discussions about it to keep people from spreading that myth even more.

just for the record i wasn't saying it was a valid way to id a cactus, i was just wondering if my thoughts matched reality (as the two are often not congruent)
