Ferocactus?

Question

My buddy sent me this plant. He thinks it is a ferocactus. Thought I'd ask you guys.

Turns out that it's Gymnocalycium pflanzii.

I think I'm going to cross it with this guy when they flower this spring/summer.

Could be G. pflanzii or it could be G. saglionis, who know's they both look so damn similar when babies.

Wow, looking through my Cacti: The Illustrated Dictionary I'd say it could be 6 or 7 in that book alone. Certainly its immaturity could be part of the trouble. That one's a fairly regular offering in greenhouses...seen it often.

PS - I of course meant it could be several Gymnocalycium from that book alone.

I see. Well I just ordered that book. Can't wait to get it.

My buddy that owns a nursery in thailand sent me this plant. I have another one that needs IDing. I'll post a pic when i get home from work.

Cacti: The Illustrated Dictionary

This dictionary concentrates on the globular cacti, particularly Mammillaria, but includes some popular columnar cactus forms such as Echinocereus.

Ah, well I got a paperback for cheap and I also got another cacti growing book. I'll get that one next paycheck.

I agree with Zelly, if you're going to buy a book on Cacti buy the new lexicon. This book has the most up to date names, not great for Echinopsis/Trichos as the work hasn't been done, but a huge amount of the taxonomy is solid. It is worth the money!
