In six secret locations in the western area of the state, a special trial run by pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline is under way to examine whether Victorian farmland is suitable for commercial poppy growing. At present, Tasmania is the only state in Australia where poppies can be grown commercially to produce medicinal opiates, which are used to make legal pharmaceutical painkillers.
