Poppy growing trials in Victoria

Thought this may be of interest to someone out there.

In six secret locations in the western area of the state, a special trial run by pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline is under way to examine whether Victorian farmland is suitable for commercial poppy growing. At present, Tasmania is the only state in Australia where poppies can be grown commercially to produce medicinal opiates, which are used to make legal pharmaceutical painkillers.

lol, isn't any dirt suitable for growing poppies? Seems that 'suitable farmland' is wherever they get approval

En oath. They're a bit of a weed from what i've read. I wonder if they'll be a water heavy crop in that part of vic though. They do need a bit of water that's for sure.
