Bert&Ernie Posted September 29, 2013 A plant that produces both tomatoes and potatoes, called the TomTato, has been developed for the UK market. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-24281192
Nemisty Posted September 29, 2013 Interesting that they're in the UK also. We have these for sale where I work and im in NZ. That plant in that photo seems to be doing well. I'm yet to be convinced the ones we have down here will produce a decent yeild out of either end of the plants. They seem pretty manky with lots of growth from the potato stock dominating the tomato and we've been informed not to remove that growth
Auxin Posted September 30, 2013 The person that wrote that article seems a bit confused. They say its a hybrid, but in the next breath they say its a graft rather than just two plants in one pot. They say 'both ends' are free of solanine, an alkaloid from both plants, but solanine is only in the potato plant- its not a tomato alkaloid. Good that the toxin isnt in the ripe tomatoes, but they seem to indicate that unripe tomatoes and leaves were not tested, making their safety unknown. Why are journalists universally unqualified to report on scientific or medical issues?
Distracted Posted September 30, 2013 A similar product, dubbed the "Potato Tom", was launched in garden centres in New Zealand this week. looks like someone else already made their product available...
Jox Posted September 30, 2013 That is pretty cool, pity they can't graft a steak on to it.
