toast Posted August 9, 2013 So a few months ago I found a Echinopsis pachinoi x cut that had a bit kink in it. I thought it might be a bit of fun to lay it flat to promote the kink growing into a bend. Every few week I'd adjust it back a so the tip was always pointing below vertical. (I know, the lame things I do to keep myself entertained ) Well today potted it up and I think it looks pretty cool, if somewhat flaccid. The question is, what will happen now that it's potted. Pup from the high point & terminate at the tip, gradually twist around at the tip...... I'll post photos in 3 months time showing how it has progressed. First correct answer & most creative post judged by the number of likes will both receive a mystery package from SAB
bogfrog Posted August 9, 2013 Awesome! I hope the main tip spirals around and begins to grow up again. You could grow it like a topiary!
AndyAmine. Posted August 9, 2013 I agree, you should try and make it do a complete circle, haha, that would really show your master cactus coaxing skills
theuserformallyknownasd00d Posted August 9, 2013 Yep, train her full circle and then into a figure 8!!
Sallubrious Posted August 9, 2013 It certainly is a gnarly looking piece of equipment. I'd label it as a nocturnal pachanoi and tell people that it stands back up at night time when all the normal cactus go to sleep
upside Posted August 9, 2013 Hi, I'd put money on it being an Echinopsis Flaccidii,, rises to attention with the waxing of a full moon ;-)
Evil Genius Posted August 9, 2013 The question is, what will happen now that it's potted. It will hopefully get itself a lawyer and sue you for crippeling it. Looks funky. Dont think it will pup from any other place than the base maybe. It happens that cacti pup from middle sections but its rare when they arent cut. But with a cacti as crooked as this one, all can happen. It reminds me of THE THING in John Carpenters Movie. Dont forget, it can only be killed with fire. lol
upside Posted August 9, 2013 Whether its potted or placed in ground, I'm sure it will start to stand upright again,, probably never straighten,, but be a sweet, curvy and twisted specimen. It may be damaged on the bends and provide a place for new pup(s)?...
incognito Posted August 9, 2013 Pup from the base
gtarman Posted August 9, 2013 Could be a good way to insult somebody...when pointing out the cactus: "You know, that was perfectly erect til yo' mumma walked by." And just to be different, I'll say pup from the kink..?
incognito Posted August 9, 2013 Bogo one could possibly direct a columnar cactus growth with some strong wire ala bonsai style into a spiral or such .. Worth a try by someone keen enough.
qualia Posted August 11, 2013 keep growing it like superlong nails, then sell it on ebay for $5000 as "ultra rare bonsai mostrose trichocereus", someone will buy it
toast Posted August 11, 2013 ^ nice. Those guys with the long nails are keen as. Totally impractical & gross, but you've gotta do what you've gotta do
toast Posted November 11, 2013 Update.... ... the last 3 months have been good to Mr Flopsy, as shown below. He has straightened up quite a lot, as upside posted, and the tip has started to twist around too, as Ceres posted. So joint winners. Most creative post goes to Sally. PM me your addresses & I'll get a SAB pack out to you each I'll post another photo in a months if I remember
