Trichocereus schaferii

Recommended Posts

Is anybody here familiar with this species? Is it even a recognized species? A syn.?

I can't find anything about it online.

I found one for sale, but not recognizing the name or finding any documentation of it makes me weary...

The shaferi monstrose is great, like a cactus a bikie would have, the crest form is like the polar opposite- it looks like a great candidate for the name 'Granny Lips'

When Oasis first produced this it was only being distributed to people who agreed to maintain very high prices. I think it was then selling for something like $800US for a not large plant.

Its been around long enough that some collectors will now part with cuttings for less.

All of it arose from a single mutant seedling that Kermit said he nearly discarded after it spent its first several years looking like a tiny pencil eraser that did not want to grow.

SS had one of theirs flower several years ago and it showed mutant flowers with fused petals.

One would need to be smuggled into Europe to get it started there.

ALTHOUGH its 100% horticultural origin suggests it *might* be possible to get around CITES restrictions?

I know this is not exactly how its worded but some years ago I mailed a bridgesii monstrose to Serbia and instead of a phytosanitary I included a letter addressed to customs stating that CITES was not intended to cover plants of purely horticultural origin so as this was a horticultural mutation that was unknown in the wild and produced entirely by vegetative propagation it should be exempt from CITES control. The parcel was apparently opened, inspected and the cutting delivered.

Here are a few pics of my T shaferi monstrose. I picked it up from Sacred Succulents about 10 years ago. Earlier this year it got a little top heavy and fell over. I was able to pick it up and stake it, but when it fell the second time it broke. This piece is about 41 centimeters (16 inches) and 3.6 kilograms (8 pounds). A flower bud or two developed last year, but they aborted.
