waterboy 2.0 Posted September 1, 2013 So I start with 6 soaking today, Its fathers day so I get to pick 3 and the boy gets 3. Father in law has been given something very special and aiming for that to be a pollen donor You've seen my patch so you'll know if I attempt to cheat if he beats me....lol I'll narrow down to probably 3, but only one is getting competition treatment...... also insurance if I get a cold front flogging me again and my frantic emergency protection measures fail. Fate and a good eye will chose the contender.....ding ding ding Daddy's picks: 1179 Sandercock 700 Lupo 1689 x 1698 sib Mini-me's picks (from a narrowed down field of contendors) Grande (failed fruiting) (1810 Stevens x 1725 Harp) * bit thin but if it cracks and grows the earths poles may shift - not optimistic 1166 Chapelle 475 Lupo
incognito Posted September 1, 2013 Sowed my seed in pots but still haven't got a patch ready got one started still got ALOT of rotary hoeing to go. I feel I've lost this one. May the best pumpkin win!!
El Presidente Hillbillios Posted September 1, 2013 never ever ever give up, get into it mate! a tractor tyre and a ute or two of poop and youll be back into the game
waterboy 2.0 Posted September 1, 2013 (edited) ^agreed... I smashed mine out of hard clay by hand initially by mattock....bastard wasn't gunna beat me...did I mention rocks yeah there was blisters, maybe a few tears and a hellava lot of four letter words. But I beat the bastard...lol Got to be in it to win it. EDIT - virgin mountain clay Edited September 1, 2013 by waterboy
El Presidente Hillbillios Posted September 1, 2013 yeah my patch was hard packed clay when i first started, although that was a few years ago. It was too hard to rotary hoe by a long way. I dug it by mattock fo the first few years
bogfrog Posted September 1, 2013 Same here, lol, (i had to google 'mattock' to find out that it was the same tool as i used) but yeh got me some good blisters in the process too I'm proud of my dirt now. Fine dirt indeed.
waterboy 2.0 Posted September 1, 2013 (edited) lol...what do you kiwi's call 'em ? Dirt stick...lol EDIT- I actually prefer a Pelican Pick ....they kick arse...but had to be a mattock for the fresh bed Edited September 1, 2013 by waterboy
bogfrog Posted September 1, 2013 (edited) Dunno? i was to busy using it to find out what it was called That was two years ago, im a self-taught gardener, had no one to id tools for me, so its all been trial and error up till now. I have since upgraded to a pitchfork and cloches ;) Edited September 1, 2013 by Ceres

waterboy 2.0 Posted September 1, 2013 (edited) Pelican Pick is a handy entrenching tool , and damn handy in the bush..... EDIT - Edited September 2, 2013 by waterboy
incognito Posted September 1, 2013 I'm thinking using a mattock may be quicker than the rotary. Took me around 2 hrs to rotary 1m by 5 metres
