Alluadia

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I was just wondering if any members here collect Alluadia's?

Alluadia's come from Madagascar & from what I can find there are six species. I would like to hear from people that have this growing or know any useful information about it.

I have a little one growing in a pot which was labeled A.procera & I came across a decent sized one last year which got blown down last month so I have a few nice cuttings here, I am not 100% sure which one this big one is but when I work it out I will put some cuttings up for trade or sale. Here is a few photos of the big on standing (last year) & some of the cuttings, if you know what Alluadia it is or can give me any advise please let me know.

I believe strictly speaking these are not a cactus, but rather a succulents May be it's just me but they aren't the prettiest looking plants either. I guess the appeal come from their origin. Personally I'm a cacti man :)

I prefer my cacti as well :), & your right its not a cactus but are very closely related, another interesting thing about them is they are dioecious making them either male or female.

I think they make for a very interesting feature in the garden & go well with my Pachypodiums.

I have one the same as yours Jox, just alot smaller.

I find it to be quite attractive, of course its got nothing on a blue peru :P

Mine dropped all its leaves for winter and looked dead for a few months, but i was impressed with how quiclky the new leaves sprouted.

I tipped mine, in the hope it would sprout multiple limbs, but alas, it just stuck out one new growing tip so i felt a bit silly.

Yours is huuge Jox.

Growing any other madagascans?

I have always been fascinated by madagascar and daydreamed of exploring the jungle there since i was a wee bean sprout.

I have a couple miniature euphoribia sp found only in madagascar, but they are suffering in my climate :(

Yeah Boggy, I think there pretty cool. That big one in the photo is not mine (well the owner said I can take anything spikes) so it kind of is & it is still growing health on the ground, that"s why I started this post to see if there was any interest & maybe help members get a cutting .

I must admit I hooked on anything Madagascar too , I have a few Pachy's from there also.

As far as the leaves go it is deciduous, so it will drop its leaves but they can re-appear in a matter of days with warming temps & a solid day of rain. Also pruning your plant is a good idea (make sure to root & grow the cuttings), I would try pruning again Boggy as this is the only way to thicken them up & keep them manageable in a pot.

If anyone in Australia thinks like me & Boggy & would like to grow this unusually plant let me know

Cheers
