Acacia Identification Please - Removal Tips?

Question

Hi can anyone please help me ID these acacias. They are on a block that needs to be cleared for a house. I'd like to relocate them to a new home. Does anyone have any tips on moving Acacias?

For quite a while Ive been wondering what are the differences between Acacia Obtusifolia, Maidenii & Longifolia. Most photo i see all look the same so maybe someone with more knowledge could explain the subtle differences im missing.

It's really hard getting an ID from these photos, as well as with fairly minimal diagnostic features and a fairly vague mid north coast location, flowers can be quite important along with a heap of other things, there's really no free ride with Acacias, particularly with species of high similarity, it can often require quite detailed work in person, there's just too much with many of them that can't be expressed in general photos.

You are probably looking at all longifolia, except 1 which is probably stricta and 4 which is probably stricta or saligna. 6 has galls.

Just read the taxonomic descriptions, that'd be your best bet.

gerbil has summed it up very well, there are differences between this species but they can be hard to see in photos like the ones posted. Some of these differences make the plant easy to tell apart but you have be around at the right time of the year, flowers, seedpods make IDing a lot easier.

I cant see any A. obtusifolia amongst your photos, but like I said it hard to be sure.

I will say when you see obtusifolia phyllodes next to longifolia phyllodes they are noticeable different.

You've got at least 3 different spp. labeled as obtusifolia that are clearly different from one another.

The "weird pods" in no. 6 are galls.

Yeah I was a bit hopeful that most of them were Obtusifolia. It looked a bit silly all of them being the same plant so I changed the post.

Sorry about the crappy pics. I had to borrow a camera spare of the moment.

Can anyone recommend either of these books for identifying Acacias;

Native Plants of the Sydney Region

Field Guide to the Native Plants of Sydney

Does Obtusifolia flower in December?

What should I be looking for to tell the Obtusifolia from the others. I thought Obtusifolia had a rounded leaf compared to longifolia with its pointed leaves. Next time I take some pics I'll make sure I get some clear close ups.

Oi buttsack :) hehe... I dont how you would go relocating them as their size/age, buts worth a shot if they HAVE to go.

This site might be helpful for ID http://www.worldwidewattle.com/

I have a book on qld/nnsw plants http://www.mangrovestomountains.com/ which is partially helpful too. It has most the above mentioned Acacia in it.

Be awesome if they could stay where they are :)

Oh a ruler or something for size comparison can help heaps when trying to ID Acacias

Don't worry about it being silly, they are very easy mistakes to make and we all have been there and are just trying to improve ourselves, hell I cringe about some of the things I used to say or think (and often still say and think haha), and now knowing my mistakes and have moved to a different day to day understanding get frustrated at people who are at the stage that I was at, thinking how can anyone think 'xyz', a major flaw on my part that I try pick myself up on and improve.

What I mean is, don't worry about embarrasing yourself or whatever, just keep an open mind and improve where you can, if people give you shit that is their problem, not yours, it really takes time and honestly no one will be able to get it all in their lifetime, even top experts fuck up all the time, it's a long journey about constantly improving. Also use it or lose it, if you don't keep up the practice, you'll be back at the start very quickly.

I really hesitate spelling out a lot of wattle information so am going to hold back a bit, far too often it falls into the wrong hands, and that includes a lot of people on this forum, too many people are impatient, have ideals and justification with such little respect and or understanding of ecology but they get on their high horse and defend their actions for whatever reason, i've seen it far too often and it really eats me up, that said i'll climb down from my similar stallion for a minute.

A benefit also in not spelling it out, is that you will learn more solidy over time, it can be hard and frustrating, but once you've put the effort in you will appreciate it, nothing in life is free, if we want something we have to work for it, just a simple fact of life, if we are handfed we will not develop the skills to their full potential.

obtusifolia

longifolia

start small, if the phyllode tips confuse you between the species, simply focus on that until you understand, then move on.

I was going to expand, but refer to previous statements. What I will try to do is get you some photos from my plants which are beaning up nicely at the moment, just give me a bit of time, will try for days but could be much longer.

I have the field guide to the native plants of sydney there is only a small section (11 pages) on Mimosacae plants and the index contains around 45 acacia species, although it does contain loads of other info on different plants it is not the most helpful book for identifying acacia species in the field.

I'ver seen Mangroves and Mountains on ebay for $70. Do you think it would be worth getting to help me ID plants?

Whoever buys the block will be building a house on it. Most of the blocks where these trees are get cleared to build the house and then they plant new trees lol. Such a waste.

Thanks for the advice mate. Your not wrong about use it or lose it. I found a obtusifolia last year but I didn't get any photos of it so I forgot what it looks like. I found the same tree again so I think I have a bit of a better idea of what to look out for now. I didn't have my camera on me so I couldn't take any pics. I could be wrong again though so I'll look at some more botanical info before I just to conclusions.

Thanks for the info about field guide to the native plants of sydney Ethos.

Does anyone have this PDF "Acacias of Australia"?

photos a little grainy due to bad shots and size reduction, so doesn't show things like resinous margins too well, need to figure out how to use this thing.
