0 DarkSpark Posted August 16, 2011 (edited) 1,2,3 are lactuca - Resin is harvestable or leaves smokable (make a good carrier for RCs) not sure on the last two, but they grow everywhere around here... The best way i have found for identifying weeds in the local area is too google "TOWN NAME + Weeds" This should bring up a list of weeds your local council has declared as invasive including pictures. edit: check this link http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/4790_8331.htm Edited August 16, 2011 by DarkSpark
0 tripsis Posted August 16, 2011 The first looks more like a Sonchus species than a Lactuca species.
0 cristop Posted August 17, 2011 The first three are Sonchus oleraceus
0 DarkSpark Posted August 17, 2011 ugh lost my reply. i stand corrected. I though that sonchus generally had glossier leaves, as well as less purple and more serration. Although the first image shows the serration quite clearly so would probs be correct.
0 solomon Posted August 17, 2011 Sonchus oleraceus is not without potential ethnobotanical use..

0 solomon Posted August 17, 2011 (edited) From Snu's Garden of Eden "Sonchus oleraceus has been found to be an effective opium substitute when boiled and drunk (Emboden 1979a); In Australia, some Victorian indigenous tribespeople say the leaves can induce sleep" He also references Ratsch's Encyclopedia which mentions it being used as substitute for Coca. edit: not to mention all it's non psychoactive uses lol. 0 DarkSpark Posted August 17, 2011 Also as hinted by centipede Medicinal value Sonchus oleraceus has a variety of medicinal uses. Parts of the plant have been used variously to stimulate menstrual flow' date=' alter liver function, stimulate fluid elimination, stall defecation, and to combat cancer, warts, inflammation and fever. I've had a gram in tea.. maybe its even stronger the lactuca actually. And smoked it. Not bad. Though my first exp was sublingual on a coastal cliff at sunset which woulda been nice anyhows Worth a try
