Most definitely a Echinopsis Hybrid. Generally these plants have been interbred extensively in search of different flower colours and variations. I don't recall seeing many crested plants about.

If it flowers the colour will be a nice surprise and the opportunity to x breed with Trichocereus is exciting.

Great find.

distracted - i am 95 % sure it is pachanoi - i have many pedros. If you would still like it, pm me and i shall pass it on to you at cost price. I am yet to pick it up - i am going to buy all three of her advertised cactus ( even though i have no need for the golden torch ) Im going to take her a nice bottle of vino too :)

If it does flower, I will let you guys know straight away for some recomendations for breeding stock, and share the resulting seedstock around ! ( i still have a lot to learn )

Thanks for the advice guys

almost identical to that multiplex above, the spination is slightly darker though. Still a beautifull plant that came with some awesome crystals scattered around the base :D Very happy with the find !

Ill get some more detailed pictures when i get my new camera early next week.

I was also told she 'thinks' she can recall it flowering some time ago :scratchhead:

Hellonasty where did you get the pic of the echinopsis multiplex as i have a two unnamed largish crests which look like the one in the pic but i also have one from collectors corner which was named echinopsis multiplex and it is more of a brain type of crest with softer spinage,im losing it to rot at the moment so cant get good pix.

the larger crests came from a what i call a snake type crest, totally diff :scratchhead:

i was planning on aereole grafting the large ones this year to work out what it is.

well im going to attemp to graft an areole today.

It will be my first attempt so ill try a few. Ill be using peres. Then hopefully an id will be not too far off !

the fisrt photo labelled as echinopsis multiplex was a user submitted photo and was self identified as far as i know ( pulled from google images ? ) the second one is a trichocereus schickendantzii ( with a little imagination i can see it being this :P ) the next photo is my crest. But really im now thinking Echinocereus multiplex v. oxigona crest ( which is the 4th photo )

(edit to add photos )

ive seen pix of crested trichocereus schickendantzii(on swap n sell a long time ago,PD maybe?)

I have pics of 2 schicky crests and an E. oxygona in my gallery. Crests are very very hard to ID and the only reason im 100% on the ID of my crests is due to the fact i found them growing from the mother plants i have in my garden. My oxygona crest grows ridiculously fast, going from a 20 cent piece size to a dinner plate in around 2 years and that was with little to no care, just a sprinkle of water every now and then. It will most likely go under the knife this season :)

ok - as soon as i got the crest home i put it in my ethno tent, under hps ( 18/6 ) and gave it a good feed of charlie carp and rainwater. I have never had a cactus flower so am a newb in this regard. But i have large tufts of furriness emerging from the aereoles all the way across and around the crest. This would indicate the beginning of flowering to me. I will make sure i get photos this week.

Anyway, if im correct and she is about to bloom, i have no idea of what species it is. I also do not know if it is self pollinating or to produce seed, if i will need to obtain pollen from another plant ? I will start searching the forum archives now for more information.

If anyone is interested in sending some pollen they feel may be worth trying to cross with this cristata then get in touch with me !

I can either pay $ for the pollen or you can have half the seed produced. Thats if i even need it :scratchhead:

for photos of the crest now, pm me B) , showing heaps of new growth and emerging flowers.

What do people think ? should i be trying to obtain pollen just in case its not self-pollinating ?

I dont even know what this crest is let alone what i should try cross it with ? :scratchhead:

Looks like an Echinopsis Crest, Tipz! A very cool plant...would love to get seeds. If i were you, i´d cross it with everything i can. Especially with the most common Trichs like Pachanoi, Bridgesii, Macrogonus, Peruvianus etc. You get pollen everywhere if you open up a thread about it. Would love to see this plant being breeded with. bye Eg

Awesome. Cant say for sure the mutation will be passed down but it´s definately very possible that some of the seedlings show some type of difference in appearance. :drool2: bye Eg
