State Yanks License of Doctor Who Cut Off Wrong Leg, Then a Toe

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The state has suspended the license of a doctor who amputated a toe without consent, five months after he removed the wrong leg of another patient.

Dr. Rolando Sanchez "presents an immediate and serious danger to the health, safety and welfare of the public," said an emergency order from the state Agency for Health Care Administration.

Sanchez, of Tampa, gained notoriety in February because of the case of patient Willie King.

King, 51, who suffered a diabetes-related circulatory disease, was to have his right leg cut off between the knee and ankle at University Community Hospital in Tampa. But the left lower leg was removed, instead, following a series of paperwork mistakes.

King, whose right lower leg was later amputated at a different hospital, got a settlement of $900,000 from University Community Hospital and $250,000 from Sanchez.

Don't forget the doctor in Australia who recently removed a woman's clitoris during an operation. She was awake during the procedure and told him not to take it. Evidently he replied that since she wasn't married, she wouldn't need it, so he took it.

Or that recent ABC doco on Oxy where the suggestion was made that doctors should be informed of their addictive, life destroying properties and not to hand them out so readily...evidently they didn't get the memo.

The Bega Butcher:

Graeme Reeves, the so-called Bega Butcher, admits he was a very depressed, distrustful and volatile man who frequently lashed out at colleagues and patients in the years leading up to him being banned from obstetrics 11 years ago.

Mr Reeves also told psychiatrists that talking to others was a "sign of weakness" and that he had long suffered insomnia and had "a major eating disorder" which saw him balloon to 106kg and then years later drop to just 59kg.

The Herald has seen nine psychiatric reports on Mr Reeves, dating from 1996 to 2004, which were prepared for the NSW Medical Board.

Dr John Woodforde and Dr Anthony Samuels both diagnosed him with a personality disorder.

Dr Samuels said he had prominent narcissistic features and was at times severely depressed.

Police are investigating Mr Reeves, 58, over accusations of sexual assault and botched procedures, including genital mutilation, upon hundreds of women in several Sydney and South Coast hospitals dating back to 1986.

He has been accused of cruelty in refusing pain medication during traumatic deliveries, terrifying midwives and patients with his outbursts and several patients, including babies, have died under his care.

He was banned from obstetrics in 1997 and ordered to see a psychiatrist, who put him on the antidepressant Zoloft, but was allowed to continue gynaecology under supervision.

Despite the ban, he was employed as an obstetrician and gynaecologist at Bega and Pambula district hospitals on the South Coast in 2002 after the Greater Southern Area Health Service failed to verify his registration status.

The psychiatric reports also reveal that when he was sacked by Hornsby Hospital in 2001 he took a job as a full time GP at Marketplace Medical Centre in Richmond, where he had been working casually.

They also show that Dr Samuels, who wrote six of the reports over five years as the then director of Mental Health at Hornsby Hospital, was kept in the dark by his own bureaucracy as to the extent and severity of the complaints against Mr Reeves, who in turn fooled the psychiatrist by arguing that he felt pressured to help local GPs with their obstetric load.

Mr Reeves felt his expertise was wasted and the GPs would never forgive him if something went wrong and he did not intervene.

In March 2003, four months after the GSAHS discovered Mr Reeves was performing caesarean sections illegally and told Dr Samuels, the psychiatrist wrote: "There are no concerns about his clinical judgement and it certainly seems that he has made a significant medical contribution to the Bega area".

WTF? This guy should be in jail!

Don't be surprised if "Why Some Psychiatrists Are Nutbars" becomes my next thread. :BANGHEAD2:

Doctor tied to 68 overdose deaths found guilty

WICHITA, Kan. — A federal jury Thursday found a Kansas doctor and his wife guilty of conspiring to profit from illegally prescribing painkillers to dozens of patients who later died, in a case highlighting medical treatment of chronic pain sufferers and prescription drug abuse.

Dr. Stephen Schneider and his wife, Linda, are charged in a 34-count indictment with unlawful dispensing of drugs, health care fraud and money laundering. Jurors convicted them of a moneymaking conspiracy prosecutors say was linked to 68 overdose deaths. They were directly charged in 21 of the deaths.

During their eight-week trial, prosecutors told jurors the Schneiders defrauded insurers and patients by carelessly writing prescriptions for potent, addictive painkillers to people with severe pain but also to drug abusers who feigned symptoms.
