smogs Posted May 4, 2005 Im giving this a go... and here is how its getting done Removed most of the stemmy bits and stuck it all in a blender and blended with a few WHOLE delosperma plants.. including roots. (this was because when i was ripping it up no roots came with it, need the microorganisms from roots?) put it into a big coke bottle with lid on tight in the sun... now im going to give it a shake once a day and open lid to allow for gas exchange. after a few weeks ill let it evap in the sun in a dish... scape off dry stuff then grind into powder. sound good? Benzito Posted May 4, 2005 I've got no actual hands-on experience making Kanna smogs. But from everything I've read, you've got the procedure down right.
apothecary Posted May 4, 2005 Aptenia I'll post my starting results tonight. I will probably try something closer to the traditional method and make a good attempt to get roots.

apothecary Posted May 4, 2005 On todays scroungings, I found a post by rev detailing how kanna is traditionally made. I'm using that prep for the aptenia stuff I picked up today. Unfortunately I couldn't get roots (the plant was too big!) I snipped off way more than I meant to without even realising it and didn't even get near roots. First step is collect. The bits still in flower have been separated and will be used as cuttings for further propagation if the bioassay proves successful. EDIT: Also noticed several fruits, so some seed also. The material was carried around my suburb for 20 minutes on my way home, so I figure that counts for wilting time. Crushed the material into a ball for bruising. Then the material goes into ziplock bags with water to ferment in the sun, no air, to be opened in 3 days for gas exchange. Then 5 days after that it'll be opened for drying/grinding. More photos then. [ 04. May 2005, 09:18: Message edited by: apothecary ]
smogs Posted May 4, 2005 im curious to see how much our results differ too apoth... im often curious as to traditional vs modern... ie leave in a pile and ferment whole vs blender mine had a few flowers and fruit but they got blended up too PH (from coversations with rev) recomends removing woody bits from stem at some stage... i cant rememebr when but you run your finger nail along it and keep goo and discard woody bit as it attracts nasty fungal stuff.. i think about halfway threw? also this plant is easier to root than Paris Hilton so shouldn't be a prob to propogate. i can provide cuttings if anyone is keen
hebrew Posted May 4, 2005 same here for cuttings as i have a very large plant at work so am interested in the results of the fermentation guys please keep us posted [ 04. May 2005, 13:42: Message edited by: hebrew ]
Benzedrine Posted May 4, 2005 I've done sceletium ferments a few times. I never use roots, it always seems wasteful to me. I take cuttings from around the entire plant and leave behind just a central shrub. The plant grows back pretty quickly this way, even with a brutal harvest. I used to bother with bruisin but the last ferment was done without it and I have noticed no discernable difference. Literally I just cut of branchs, give them a quick wash and throw them in a sealed plastic bag. I stir daily and have never failed to make a good product. So I can vouch for a worse prep getting the goods, if it'll work for aptenia is another matter. Shouldn't the product be the same just much weaker? [ 04. friendly Posted May 4, 2005 Aptenia cordyfolia has approx 12% of the Mesembrine as S. tortuosum, according to published assays. What species are you using? Also, throwing in "...a few delosperma plants..." might skew the results, no? How can you be certain which is producing the effect? [ 04. apothecary Posted May 4, 2005 From ID, mine is Aptenia cordifolia. Dunno about smogs. Also friendly, mine is nothing but Aptenia, so I wouldn't be too worried. Lastly, what do you mean 12% of the sceletium? 12% total mesembrine in the finished product or 12% of whatever % sceletium has?
smogs Posted May 5, 2005 delosperma would account for less than 1% of the plant material so i dont think it will be an issue in that respect. and yes i used Aptenia cordifolia as well
Torsten Posted May 5, 2005 12% means it is about 1/8th of the potency of scelly.
friendly Posted May 5, 2005 The reason I mentioned Delosperma is because some species have been assayed to contain tryptamines during certain seasons (Trout's Notes) and I thought these--mixed with mesembrine--might synergize, especially if smoked.
Tomer Corymbosa Posted May 6, 2005 look on this site! it has everything on the Mesembryanthemaceae/Aizoaceae Family! take a look: http://trout.yage.net/sc/SoS_2004_Trout.pdf
