ferret Posted January 6, 2011 So I think these are pretty cool plants after reading up on its culinary uses recently. I've only ever used it for liqueurs but a friend told me recently that in Japan they make a cordial by soaking the leaves in water which he spoke highly of. I have a couple , what I am pretty sure are the red leaf Shiso type and a green top/ purple bottom type which I suppose must be a citral chemotype. got a few seedlings of the shiso type and will have seed of both in a few months, that id be keen to swap for any of the other chemotypes that are out there. This "PP" chemotype sounds pretty sweet methinks!
PhoenixSon Posted January 6, 2011 Have a straight green, brought in from japan. Flower'd and is seeding at the moment. THey use it heaps after eating sushi, kills bacteria. Natural perservative. Also they use the red variety to preserve ume, gives umeboshi its red colour.
random Posted October 31, 2011 Just sown some purple perilla seed I found from last year. I thought it was a salad leafy vegetable, turns out it has alot more interesting uses. Spacey I don't suppose you have any seed left from your Japanese green that I could buy?
