San Rainbow Posted August 9, 2010 Hi, can anyone point me in the right direction where I can get a scalpel and blades? cheers

Magicdirt Posted August 9, 2010 I get medical grade scalpels and blades from an art supplies shop. The blades come in a sterile foil wrapper too. No 11 blades are not very good for mycological work as the wedges don't slide off, I go for NO 10's or No 20's ie something with a rounded profile.
punkin Posted August 9, 2010 I just use a little stainless hobby knife with small scapel type blades. Sterilize in alchohol. It doesn't have to be too sharp to cut agar,

Magicdirt Posted August 9, 2010 The type of blade is not really essential it just makes things a bit easier, I use jars instead of petri dishes so my agar is much thicker than it would be on a petri, which compounds the problem of the agar not sliding off. Try to keep your agar under 3mm thickness when you pour and that helps too. Like Punkin said they don't have to be that sharp, I used spoons for ages and they did the job. Mycot Posted August 11, 2010 Rather than use a scalpel, I'll often use a large pair of sharp tweezers. Easily cuts squares in agar and transference is simple matter without problems.
