gromit Posted March 29, 2010 Hi all, When I first noticed these pups on one of my grafted lophs, I thought they would outgrow their attachment to one another. But, about a year later, they still look fairly well stuck together. Is this common? Will they stay together, providing I give them enough TLC? Cheers
tripsis Posted March 29, 2010 That's what is known as dichotomous growth. It's a genetic abnormality, just like monstrose growth. They will stay like that. I've not seen dichotomous growth on just one offset of a cactus before. Nice plant too!
KanJe Posted March 30, 2010 Nice plant Dr sanchez. I had one of my Turbs do this too. I'm not sure if its genetic. I think it might be something that happens directly because of grafting. But who knows You should chop it off and try to get going on it's own roots, it might have more value that way.
tripsis Posted March 30, 2010 You can get dichotomous growth from seed grown cacti too, which would imply the trait is genetic. Perhaps this isn't the case for a graft though.

gromit Posted March 31, 2010 Cheers all. You should chop it off and try to get going on it's own roots, it might have more value that way. Yeah that's my next step. I've never done a degraft before, so it's a bit scary. Do you think it'll be any trickier to do this because of it's dichotomous growth?
KanJe Posted March 31, 2010 I haven't done much degrafting either but I don't think it will be any harder than a normal offset. I'm sure you know the basics with this but maybe try a root hormone.
kadakuda Posted March 31, 2010 nice plant zelly. sanchez, your plant will grow out 2 seperate heads adn be joined at teh base. like zelly's plant but 2 instead of 3. not that uncommon, but quite pretty. often times with plants like zelly's they will continue to grow more, much like a crest, snake like, but without stretching. whisperz Posted April 2, 2010 (edited) I find these dichotomous growths a delight for the cultivator. It's nice to have something other than the norm. Ignore the burns from the pyrethrum spray, it was a necessary requirement this season. This loph is alittle over 3.5 years of age... Dr lucien sanchez, I'd love to see follow up snapshots showing growth development.... whisperz,... Edited April 2, 2010 by whisperz
