new to the forum, pls read

Recommended Posts

hi!

if you are new here, and you want to start a thread about a specific subject or plant, please use our search engine first and read as much as you can about the subject.

now unfortunately using this search engine can often lead to two extreems, either no results or far too many.

but let me assure you that there is a wealth of knowledge in those old posts,

and we have probably covered most of the psychoactive plant ethnos.

once you have researched a bit here and there and on the internet in general about your plant in question,

you are basicly ready to ask your questions.

but just asking straight away without having tried to learn about the subject, gets often frowned upon.

and it's obvious why, because it's all give and take here, and not just taking, sorry if that sounds harsh...

it's very simple, you tell us a bit of what you found out growing this particular plant, or what makes you interressted in working with those plants.

ok, i just clicked to right hand corner search and entered "blue lotus",

too many results came up...

next, i click more search options, and than click the more options button at the bottom.

this time, i leave out the word blue because it's a too common word.

so i type into search keywords > lotus

and for good measurment, type into filter by membername > torsten

and because lotus is a plant i only search the > ethnobotany forum

and voila i get super lilly and lotus posts!

http://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/inde...ghlite=%2Blotus

funny enough the same search without using torsten as a filter gives a bit too many results and many of them are crap.

http://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/inde...ghlite=%2Blotus

so basicly it seems that filtering by membername torsten, seem to help to get the good posts,

or generaly try to filter by using moderators or senior members nicknames.

Also remember that sometimes you can get a different result by searching the forum using google.

if you type your search into google the way you normally would to do a good specific google search, and after the search type in site:http://www.shaman-australis.com/forum

And google only searches the forum.

Can be another good way to try if the normal search engine is being tricky.

Peace

another thing i have found if you are searching for specific varities of plant or info on them its best to leave the species name out e.g Acacia Madenii you would get far better results just searching madenii if you use the name Acacia Madenii you will get a myriad of information and threads about other acacia also

If you use the advances search options http://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/inde...mp;CODE=explain you can look for certain combinations eg: "Acacia maidenii" or +Acacia +maidenii and so on. Sometimes you just have to read a lot of threads and there is no way around it. But that can be a good thing as you might have new information, research or a new angle on an old discussion.

There is a lot of information hidden in hosted pages that are not part of the forums such as http://www.shaman-australis.com/~auxin/soluble.html (Auxin rocks!). Use the search field at the bottom of the SAB webstore to do a Google search of both the forums and hosted pages.

Already mentioned but i have also found when you get multiple results you can sometimes narrow it down by using the "" marks

eg "Madenii'

strangebrews said in another thread,

Clicking the "ascending order" option in the search engine is usually of immense value I always find.

somebody asked for a list of names which might be good to use as a filter option, but i don't think it's a good idea, as it might be misunderstood, however i will mention one name and that is rev, who unfortunately doesn't post here anymore.
