Whos been to South/Central America?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys and girls,

just hoping i could pick the brains of anyone that had been travelling through anywhere south of texas. Im heading off to explore for while and would love to find a few places of ethnobotanic interest. With a country so rich in psychoactives, im hoping it wont be too hard.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Funny Thunder, I think you picked three who haven't been south of Texas? :P

Plenty here who have made trips in that vicinity, sure they will chime in!

A lot go to Peru for Ayahuasca exploration but if I was there it'd be all about the cacti hehe. I think there could be some really interesting mycology work done in Mexico comparing specimens to their Indian sub-continent bretheren. Coca strain analysis in Bolivia, Colombia, etc. Jurema investigation in Brazil. A. peregrina hunting and cultivation, getting some new B. caapi and Psychotria genetics...as they say, so many plants, so little time.

I can dream

My son and ex live in Texas...I've been there 3 times in the last 6 years, and am due to go again next year....they live in a place called the Woodlands which is exactly that, massive trees everywhere and deer and rabbits and all sorts of cool nature....its in a place called Magnolia which is about an hour and a half outside of Houston....apparently the azures are mental there at the right time of the year...as far as any other Ethno's you would have to travel a far deal south towards around the Mexican border for Peyote etc. Many Texans grow big ass cactus and you will see thousands of Pedro's in peoples yards and on the sides of roads and along side ranch fence lines. That's about all I can tell you about Texas..its a great place to visit and I swear you won't meet a friendlier bunch of people anywhere on earth...

They make me laugh like all hell Y'all.

I was in panama city before the take down of noriega.

It was just casino place with polite cops on every block.

And he became a drug lord.

But Cuba, I think the Communist there's have a real opportunity to stay in controll by that the communist party isn't a simply reaction from capitalism.

Very hard to do as religion is simply viewed as a organ of state control.

[eliminated]

Which makes it a historical outlook that has to be eliminated from earth from a communist viewpoint.

A Nazi viewpoint was more horrible which simply a pagan view which both the communists and nazis did with full vigour after control of a state which the meaning of a state is they can't speak any languages

and can't travel beyond a state and gets eduacated by a state by taxes.

I been raised on a U.S AirForce nuclear base for most of my life so Pledgeing Alligious to the flag every morning at 6 years old was my experience.

'Because of the lawlessness, the Mexican city of more than 1.5 million people might as well be a thousand miles away from the more than 650,000 people who live across a thin ribbon of a river.'

------------------------------------------------------------

Good luck.

The Mexican drug cartels are into Satanic religion as thats supposed to make a magical ointment [human body parts] that provides magical powers by rituals from arrests or gunshots.

7,000 dead this year along a samll part of the U.S. border within Mexico, so the magical ointment is not working .

Ayahuasca ceremonies are pretty easy to come by in Ecuador. To a lesser extent in Peru and Bolivia.

You will find San Pedro in Peru and Bolivia too.

Mexico is well known for its tourist mushroom culture, around Palaneque and other ruins.

Cocaine is rampant in South America if that's your thing.

I've been to Oaxaca several times. Each time I meant to make my way to Huautla de Jimenez, and each time I was side-tracked by the wonderful food of the various states/regions.

I'd say that the cuisine of Oaxaca could probably put you in a state of bliss that would rival the food of the gods. The grass that's grown in the hills of Oax is some of the best too, although it can be tough to track down. Hongos are pretty easy to come by, even outside of Huautla.

Belize is beautiful as well, but not much else to take in apart from the beautiful views of rainforest/ocean/ruins. Good grass as well, but it's basically just sexi mexi...can't touch the Oax.

Thanks Coco! I have to admit that I've never been outside of my hemisphere though. I just "frequent" Mexico because I have family and friends that put me up, and Belize was actually a school (biology) trip.

I'm still crossing my fingers that I'll be able to make it to Peru some day...

(not to mention all the other wonderful places on this beautiful planet)

Just got back from Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Costa Rica - fucking rocked although I brought back some kind of infection or parasite in my liver.

Some places worth visiting are Tepoztlan - not becuase of psychoactives, but you'll wish you had some when your there because its seriously the most spectacular and eerie place ive ever been - you can feel the gods there more than anywhere else in the world...

In terms of psychoactives in mexico they are bloody everywhere of varying quality. The attitude of mexicans to psychoactives and to life in general is very refreshing - i tell you we;ve got it wrong in the west!

In Oaxaca, Huautla de jiminez (sp?) is a place you can go to get mushrooms - its very touristy and not very authentic and frankly the locals look down on mushroom taking foreigners there.

I much preferred and would recommend San Jose del Pacifico - a beautiful little town up in the clouds where mushrooms grow everywhere and where locals put on a 'rituales de sanacion' where a curandero puts on a presentation that includes 'ceremonia del teonanacatl' - its all in spanish but its highly fascinating. You go with the curandero to pick the mushrooms at a sacred site and then their ingestion is demonstrated.

We were also there when they had their town festival on and some young guys doing some very strange zapotec ceremonies in the local bar were a highlight - my spanish wasnt strong enough to full catch the drift of what they were doing, but it was very trippy, and very cool.

Down in the forest there they have three old trees that have been carved into old faces and its a place that traditionally backpacking trippers hike down to to trip.

Local shrooms are Ps.mexicanna and Ps.zapotecorum so they are authentic species.

And lastly, there is a creepy guy that hangs around up the top of the town who will try to sell you 2 ounces of quality bud for seriously 100 peso - which at the time was around $10 aus. Thats a lot of smoking!!!

Down on the coast - the usual places like Puerto Escondido and all that are pretty prolific. We went to zioolite because its a bit more alternative. It was pretty amazing and I can safely say it is the only place ive been to where there was a young girl walking around naked in the water in the middle of the day with flowers in her hand tripping balls of shrooms and no one even batted an eye lid.

There is weed EVERYWHERE at zipolite - I mean EVERYWHERE, but some of the dudes that try to sell to you are pretty dodgy - one guy actually pushed me when i knocked him back and another followed me for a while at night which kinda freaked me out at the time as I was by myself. A french guy told me the next day that the same dude had pulled a gun on him. They sell weed, coke, and 'shrooms' which when examined are kept in some kind of honey based black liquid and dont look like any psychedelic mushrooms ive ever seen so tread with extreme caution! Not psilocybes or panaeolus species so im not sure what they were.

CHiapas and Palenque area do have mushrooms that the locals will tell you grow around the area - as someone said above, but it also has thousands upon thousand of pushie tourists as all the tours go there and near the ruins there are only a few accommodation options. near palenque Its all very westernised and 'sanitised'. Other places in chiapas we generally enjoyed but the locals were a bit more reserved than in oaxaca. Another ruin worth checking out is Tonina.

Once you get over to the caribbean coast be prepared to be ripped off majorly in every way. Other than Cancun, the water quality can be iffy at times and the prices will blow you away. Chichen Itza is great, Tulum is ok but I got a bit jaded with the time-share pushers and rip off prices and we moved on pretty quickly.

As for Belize - shit its easy to get smoke there as well ofcourse - and the cops caught an irish bloke blowing one in the street and just told him to 'watch himself'. its pretty lawless around Belize City - the islands are better, but the quality of the smoke and everything else the friendly locals will try and palm off to you is questionable.

And Belizean beer is SHIT! Food is good there though!

Guatemala is a bit cagey - great place but my first night there i had a few beers, turned around and bumped a guy in a bar holding some sort of AK47 or machine gun. Scary country. He was a guard for some other guy. Weapons everywhere, reasonably lawless and a place that it pays to keep on your toes. As an example belizeans fear Guatemalans who often cross the border into western belize to rob, rape and pillage. They have buses overe there with a guy at the front of the bus who holds a pump action and his job is to shoot anything or one that gets in the way of the bus.

its not all that scary in reality - most of it is trumped up, but use common sense and dont count your money in the bar full of slack-eyed dudes or say no to the man with the gun in your face...

Tikal is a trip and they have some nice volcanos.

Costa Rica - FUCK MAN! its an awesome country - clean, countryside not unlike Tasmania - a volcano that will blow your fucking mind and natural beauty that is totaly pristine. And if you want quality powder then you wont be disappointed - infact you'll have your clothes off and be lost in the forest hunting animals in no time... like an animal.

Great coffee too if you like it.

LOl - did it come across that way? I think that was a criticism of Palenque. Thanks for reading anyway.

It depends. On the one hand I like quiet places and the quiet places in Mexico were by far the better spots - the touristy places were full of scammers, annoying yuppy-tourists and heavy pricing. The people in quieter places were much more friendly, interesting and worth talking to. They werent trying to flog you time share, etc. :)

But the more remote places can at times be annoying:

I caught a bus that was going to take four hours, and got a shocking stomach cramo within a minute of getting on. If i got off the bus I knew that it wouldnt wait and there was no other bus coming. So im sitting there in extreme heat in cramped conditions trying not to shit my pants. I finally get to my destination and its about to flow out of me. So i rush off the bus and scream 'donde banyos!' where is the toilet?

They point to a white brick building - its a U shape with no door facing a basketball court. Kids are playuing all in veiw of the crapper and I have to pay 3 peso to use it and get toiletpaper. I pay, sit down and make eye contact with kids as I crap! It was a shocker of an experience - it was loud and wild and the little girl who i paid for usage stood about two metres away hearing it all.

i was over mexico at that point!! :)

http://www.themoneytimes.com/20090421/polo...id-1064658.html

'Wellington -- An investigation of the death of 21 polo horses centers on whether they died from a toxin, a virus or a contagious disease, said officials in Wellington, Fla.'

21x 100,000$ each means 2.1 million loss.

The insurance guys are be pissed to pay it.

I wonder what person thought that was a good idea to poison them.

Apparently not thinking clearly.
