paradox Posted August 29, 2007 (edited) today i went to this beautiful huge cactus garden. unfortunately i don't feel comfortable posting it's location on the internet but i hope everyone enjoys checking out these pics as much as i enjoyed taking them!! this is just some porn, soon i will post some more in the id section so we might be able to get some more accurate species names. ok thats probably enough for now, got alot more to come in the future tho Edited August 29, 2007 by Paradox
dqd Posted August 29, 2007 Can anyone id pic #6, the plant in the foreground please? I have a log that looks quite like it! (sorry if this is a hijack )

shruman Posted August 29, 2007 (edited) Very freakin nice! I realy like pic no 3 very cool pic!. Is it a garden open to the public? "Looks like a KK242." It doesnt look like the typical KK242/T. peru/ T. cuzco? to me, I to have a few very similiar to these that were sold to me as macrogonus but to me they seem similiar to "true pachanoi". Evil Genius Posted August 29, 2007 Hi guys, it looks like a Trichocereus Knuthianus but i´m not sure as i dont have one to compare. I would like to know more about the plant! bye Eg
ferret Posted August 29, 2007 (edited) #6 i think is what some aussies call knuthianus, based on similar plant at hobart BG with that label. heres a similar one in mildura. and a healthier one in the background of this pic. that fruit hanging off it gave a good proportion of variegated seed by the way hehe i think some OS seed vendors sell knuthianus seed that gives plants that look very diferent though. (EG ya beat me to it while i was engrossed in my cacti pics folders. Ive got a few plants i could cut and send you one of these days bro) Edited August 29, 2007 by ferret
Evil Genius Posted August 29, 2007 (edited) Hi Ferret, that would be....well let me think about a word that explains my joy in an adequate way....fucking great! I would love to cover your expenses though. bye Eg Edited August 29, 2007 by Evil Genius
naja naja Posted August 29, 2007 today i went to this beautiful huge cactus garden.unfortunately i don't feel comfortable posting it's location on the internet but i hope everyone enjoys checking out these pics as much as i enjoyed taking them!! Good idea, I would only let peeps u know and trust , knowledge of that gardens location. Also, random internet guests can view these section and are not as scrupulous as most SAB members. ok thats probably enough for now, got alot more to come in the future tho No that is not enough, more pics please
paradox Posted August 29, 2007 (edited) hey ferret, those pics you posted are definately the same species. no idea about how accurate the knuthianus id is but i'm about to order some 'supposed' knuthianus cuttings from an old cactus grower, so i'll see what he labels as knuthianus! hey naja naja, it's never enough eh. cacti seem to be that way, once you're addicted you just want more and more give me a bit of time, i should have some more up by this arvi Edited August 29, 2007 by Paradox
Andrew Posted August 29, 2007 I,ve got a good sized "knuthianus" approx. 1.2 m in a pot and would really like to know if this is the right id.I just call it that because thats the only named cacti I could find that looks like it,I bought it as a "san pedro".Nice looking cactus and grows well too. Ace Posted August 30, 2007 Fantastic collection, Paradox! Cant wait to see a couple more pickies and IDs I totally agree - dont give away locations (unless at least via PM), but could you tell us which state the collection is located in? I was thinking probably VIC, based on your location, but just wanted to check Sorry for a bit of a hijack - but regarding the cactus in question above (pic number 6) - do the below cuttings look like the same species? I have been trying to get a solid ID on them for a while now and they still remain possibly T. cuzcoensis, T. knuthiansus or T. peruvianus. What do people think? Sorry for file size - it should automatically come up as a thumb, if not I will delete shortly to keep with the original flow of the thread. Thanks!
dqd Posted August 30, 2007 Interesting the way the core is offset in all samples
Evil Genius Posted August 30, 2007 Hi Ace, i´d say that these are Trichocereus Knuthianus! This plant seems to be very common in Australia! It is very rare in germany though! bye Eg
Ace Posted August 30, 2007 Yeah all cuttings were pups that started branching outwards, then upwards (sort of away from the mother - but no different to any trich) - I just had them cut close to the pup-joints. I think that'd the the only explanation for it Thanks EG - I dont know if it would be possible but if you are interestested, I might be able to send a smaller cutting/pup over your way? trucha Posted August 30, 2007 (edited) Knuthianus hasa short but distinct trunk generally if that is helpful? Edited August 30, 2007 by trucha
Ace Posted August 30, 2007 Thanks Trucha. From what I remember (was a couple months since last seen mother plant) - I think the mother was either topped at about 1.5-2m or it just started branching lots (but there was heaps of limbs pretty much from the ground up). General consensus says that's the ID I've been searching for Sorry for the hijack once again Paradox but I think it should be reasonably certain that the specimen in your 6th pic is T. knuthianus (as is mine)
KanJe Posted August 30, 2007 Thats one sexy Astrophytum...
paradox Posted August 30, 2007 (edited) yeah ace, your cuttings definitely look the same! & the garden is in NSW & trucha i reckon that'll be most helpful! when i go back i will check it out & get some detail pics of the base. some more pics : frekin tall cereus gnarly bridgesii ok, just wait a sec & i'll post some in the id section for further id discussion Edited August 30, 2007 by Paradox
KanJe Posted August 30, 2007 OMG, must have been a good field trip. You really must have had a good time paradox. How old do you guys think those Astrophytum are in the background of the 5th image...? 20 years maybe?
tonic Posted August 30, 2007 (edited) Don't think they are astros, have a closer look, they have spines. EDIT: Unless I am looking at the wrong pic? Edited August 30, 2007 by Phosphene_Dream
shruman Posted August 30, 2007 I think Pachycereus? maybe.

KanJe Posted August 30, 2007 (edited) They look strangly like mature Astrophytum myriostigma (Nudem maybye), I could be wrong... Is it possible to get a higher resolution image of the 5th pic Paradox? I'm still not convinced... Edited August 30, 2007 by KanJe
