qualia Posted July 15, 2012 how long before queensland puts creationism on it's public syllabus you think?
ballzac Posted July 15, 2012 (edited) It would be pretty hard to institute that in Australia I think. Considering that Australia is much more like Europe than America in its public understanding of science, and even America was not able to include creationism in its public schools when it was challenged in court. Though, admittedly, we do not have the same constitutional rights as Americans. I find it interesting that so many of the creationist organisations in America started out in Australia, even though creationists are a very small minority in Australia. The difference in the public understanding of evolution is huge though. The people who promote creationism publicly probably understand it but intentionally misrepresent it, whereas the ~50% of the American population who don't accept evolution clearly do not have even a basic understanding of what the theory actually proposes, explains, and predicts, let alone all the evidence supporting the theory. In Australia, I think almost everyone not only accepts the theory of evolution but also understands the basics of descent with modification and evolution due to natural selection. The main issue of "teaching creationism", is that they have no theory. A theory needs to explain observations and make predictions. There is no such thing in creationism. The entire syllabus would basically consist of "God dun it!". Apart from that, they could only spend their time trying to refute evolution which, by necessity, would involve quote-mining, straw-manning, and lying about the evidence we actually have by either claiming that it doesn't exist, that it is fraudulent, or by misrepresenting the interpretations given by scientists who actually specialise in evolutionary biology. ThunderIdeal Posted July 15, 2012 yeah, that won't happen here, although they will let a volunteering church nut from the community walk into the class and address the students the same way a teacher would, describing as though fact a whole lot of stuff that they read in storybook. it seems to be very effective because meeting an adult christian seems to be rare but nearly all of my school classmates identified as christians and believed in the bible. (i reckon teachers should introduce them. "i have to let this person talk to you but you don't have to listen to him or believe what he says. i am your teacher, this person is not a teacher.) IME australians aren't interested in tearing down the theory of evolution, they accept that something like evolution happens. they seem to be very hazy on the details though, beyond "organisms change over the span of many generations". ballzac Posted July 15, 2012 I don't know. Most people I have talked to have a basic understanding of how evolution works. i.e. that genetic traits are passed onto offspring and these are modified due to mutations, which can only be passed on to the next generation if they provide a survival benefit. Even my girlfriend understands evolution, and she once, when I told her that Jupiter has a lot of moons, asked if it's always night time there because it's night time when the moon comes out Of course evolutionary biology is a huge field, and you need to study it for years to have an in depth understanding of the details. The thing about creationists, particularly the young-earth creationists typical of evangelical christians in America, pretend to understand and support science, but they deny the evidence from almost every field of science, whether it's geology that determines the age of the earth, astronomy that determines the age of the universe, cosmology which confirms the 'initial' state of the universe and the following period of inflation, genetics and paleontology, which both independently verify the evolutionary history of biological diversity, basic laws of physics which disprove the possibility of a global flood, as well as elementary logic relating to things like how a man could put two of each of dozens of millions of animal species on this planet on a boat. It would just be a big joke if it weren't for how many people in some countries (America being the only western country as far as I know) actually believe it. It's amazing watching American 'news' shows where the presenters are not embarrassed to publicly make comments about evolution being a stupid idea, while demonstrating no basic understanding of what it actually is.
