Psychedelic Tunes?

Recommended Posts

Like the title suggests, does anyone have preferences when it comes to trips and tunes? What are the better tunes out there? Still very new to this sort of music, but there is some unreal stuff out there, just wondering if anyone has a good cd to recommend? :shroomer:

Is there better tunes for different voyages? eg shrooms might be some sort of earthy psychedelic beat and salvia might be a fast paced one? (examples only  )

"Hallucinogen in Dub" is the only music I have ever really journeyed with... btw, I don't really like Hallucinogen or Ott's work, but this is a really classic album!

Hmmm... thanks for the ideas guys :) - I'll have to look into the "Hallucinogen in Dub" one for sure. does anyone know if there is a free sample of it on the net? Or where I might be able to get a copy?

I've got a copy right here just send me a return envelope you can have a copy for free...

I find the right music of utmost importance while tripping...

the wrong music can really bring me down and make the trip miserable...

since I'm somewhat older than most people here I have different tastes...

yes I like shpongle too, their work is amazing, almost perfect so to say...

but that's specialised music for tripping mainly you could almost classify it as cliche (which it is not really those boys are great)

I prefer music that comes from all walks of life, but of course it has to be good, definitely not conservative.

I HATE country music and everything related...

on the other hand there is some very sensitive music which borders on country but isn't country because it isn't faschist (all country music lovers must be faschist, there's no other explanation)

A great example is David Crosby from Crosby stills nash and young...

stills and nash are country music bums, don't like their stuff at all, someone uploaded a country album fro Nash when I still allowed uploads at soulseek... after listening to 2 minutes of Graham Nash, I got so repelled that I banned the user who uploaded the album to me, fucken hate that album...

But David Crosby is an entirely different story, he unites all possible good elements of that sort of music and rises way above it, his music is super-harmonic, spheric, luminescent, shining and overpowering in it's sensitivity... talking about his early stuff, end 60s, early 70s, before he became of hapless alcoholic and needed a liver transplant...

"if I could only remember my name" is an excellent example of his genius, not sure, didn't read up on it, but I guess jerry garcia also plays on that album

another one is "early 70s studio outtakes' which is like heaven....

I had some restless trip once, slightly to strong, couldn't settle down, needing something strong to calm me down...

and that album was a saviour, especially the repeated songs "may the mountains be my home" expressed so much heart-felt love and yearning for fullfillment, it will even settle the worst confused trip (unless you hate that sort of music...

another one, definitely one of my top ten most liked and played albums is Fiona Apple's "Tidal" (not her other albums which are ok, very good, but not nearly as good as that one. I'd like to go as far as to pronounce it "best album of the 90s or so"

favourite songs "sullen girl" (NO.1! "under the sea" wow when she sings that I'm truely under the sea of emotions feelings etc unbeatable that one)

2nd best "Across the Universe" which is so good I don't know which is better her version or the beatles whose song it originally is

Also very good "slow like honey" makes me remember the true extasy of sensual pleasure, not just remember but actually feel it, so much it knocks me out I go into a trance and don't hear what other people say to me.

What else is good for tripping?

King Crimson (who just put out a very very cool jazz album in 2005 "the crimson jazz trio" very cool, if one needs to cool down).

If you like religious madness trips try "Spooky Tooth with Pierre henry" Ceremony, on of the wicketest Rockblues/avantgarde electronics in existence.

Some people really meet jesus and/or Lucifer while listening to this on a trip...

If you're in bad luck that album will give you nightmares for years to come...

More electronic tripping music "White Noise" An electric Storm, an end 60s album, one of the first to use moog synthesizers and one of the best. "White Noise III" is also worth listening too.

"The United States of America" 1968 album (their only release ever) is also very avantgarde for it's time and still today. heavily influenced by LSD-consumption. Very very good.

Beatles are always a good one when you're in the right mood. Their most psychedlic songs:

"Across the universe" "Within you without you" "Strawberry Fields forever" "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds(LSD)" "For the benefit of Mr Kite" and more that don't come to mind right now.

Even the stones put out a psychedelic album in the late 60s "their satanic majesties request" definitely worth a listen and surely the best stones album ever (they didn't make many good ones, only their early ones in my opinion, their later ones suck so much I can't even sit and listen through one)

Jimi Hendrix will do the job nicely. very good, positive music.

Want something really off-beat? The "Zodiac Cosmic Sounds" only made ever one album but it's very nice and dreamy.

Ok hopefully my valiums are working now and I'll try to sleep again.

ooops forgot to mention Brian Eno who has put out so many albums it's impossible to keep track of them all.

My present favourite of his is "Nerve Net" very advanced for it's time...

advanced enough to compete with whatever latest Trance Albums maybe on the market...

very good...

:shroomer: I would recommend classical works by Beathoven, Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi and Greig.

Greigs, peer gynt suite is fantastic. I find classical seems to tell a story throughout the composition, it certainly helps the imagination along. Sweet flutes and serenading strings, I love it.

Tribal, drums, rainforrest sounds, bird calls, nature sounds

Soundtrack to monty pythons life of Brian was just perfect one night!

Thanks for all the tunage insights everyone, perticularly Gomaos - I loathe the whole country scene - you might as well start listening to a cat crapping hotdogs... (no offense to any cat-lovers  )

I gotta say, love all the oldies like Beatles, Hendrix, Stones, Zeppelin, etc. Those were the days when music was everything. I will have to do a bit of research on a few of them other names, cant say I've even heard of some of them, but looking forward to hearing them anyway. And I'd love to take you up on that offer Gomaos, I'll PM you.

Thanks again to every one - this list will help me out for sure

Any other suggestions, add them to the pile :P

More ambiedelica/dub/chill stuff.

It can be boring and a bit samey... but for journeying good!

you can find samples here for a LOT...london is pretty much the world capital of this sort of music and so I was able to dip into it all there...seems to be the antidote toital!

none of it is really mindblowing (not supposed to be really!)... but I recently did a journey and found it very good for the "coming down" phase...

http://www.idspiral.org

has an ambient chill shop where you can listen to samples...a really good effort!

someone gave me a chill dj's mp3 collection which took a long time to assess and these are the highlights for jouneying!

solar fields - top shelf natural atmopheric chill from sweden

www.myspace.com/solarfields

capsula - funky clean

androcell - well regarded!

lunar sound - highly regarded

bluetech - especially sines and singularities album, very clean and clear electronica

carbon based life forms - atmospheric

benza - especially "retrofuturism" - www.myspace.com/benza

abakus - worthy plus!

biosphere - especially "substrata" - natural atmospheric

you can find samples for most of these artists in the ID spiral shop...

other names

kuba

greg hunter

Murcof

phuture primitive

Just thought I'd beat Passive to it and say Carcass is the best thing to listen to any time of the day. Straight, tripping, sleeping, making love. Carcass all the way, the ultimate music for any scenario.

For Salv go with something gentle and flowing. Debussy is my top pick and really adds to the experience.

i enjoy all kinds of music, but when tripping i'm fairly particular about what to listen to. anything with lyrics is generally a big no, i just feel it gets in the way of the journey. here are some of my favorite tripping albums, highly recommended

secret chiefs 3 - book M

acid mothers temple & the melting paraiso ufo - magical power from mars

ozric tentacles - strangeitude / spirals in hyperspace

:shroomer:

Hallucinogen - mystical experiences

AIR - talkie walkie

Gondwana (not 'gondwana band') - Xenophon

Andean Music - lotsa bands to choose from, some tracks can sound a little cheesy...may feel like you're in a Mexican restaurant, but the flutes, guitars and rhythms range from festive/joyous to lilting/haunting...evocative music to be sure. Cactus seems to like it

ELO - (Electric Light Orchestra) Good for shits and giggles, with 70s era synth and spacey sound effects.

Emerald web...ye oldy ambient/electronica.....excellent for coming back to earth.

Ali Farka Toure.... Incredible acoustic guitarist/vocalist from Mali (recently deceased)...doesnt really sound like a guitar in the conventional sense, much more exotic than that...difficult to explain, but creates interesting 'ethnic' sound scape, visions of thatched-roofed African villages at sunset, soothing yet 'foreign'.

One album that is indispensable for any experience that is conducive to it is...

Head Hunters by Herbie Hancock originally released in 1973.

B000002AGP.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_V37084834_.jpg

Try it out if you've never heard it. And remember its period when electronica was really primitive and in its infancy. In this context the album is even more impressive.

Another one that is very enjoyable is...

Ladies and Gentlemen by George Michael.

B00000DHRX.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_V37410199_.jpg

I especially enjoy "A moment with you" which has the catchphrase "can't help thinking it's a miracle...." over and over which is awesome in the right moment.

Disc 1 has these lovely ballads that don't jar the nerves at all, and the second disc has his catchier fast songs. Yes it's not everyone's cup of tea but its an awesome album imo :)

And a final one for classical fans...

BACH: The Cello Suites by Yo-Yo Ma

B0000029YB.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_V37080684_.jpg

Suite No:5 is my favorite here and the climax and ending pieces the 'Gavotte' and 'Gigue' can be listened to over and over in the right frame of mind. Really smooth all the way through with some real catchy parts.

Totally agree with you there!

Have you heard Sextant?

hancoc_herb_sextant~~_101b.jpg

It was made in 1972 and a fantastic introduction to jazz fusion.

My favourite is the first track, Rain Dsnces

Right from the start, "Rain Dances" can't help but grab your attention, with sequencer bubbles percolating away against ascending, metallic synth lines within a vast echo. Listening to this, you feel as if you've stumbled upon a mad professor's chemistry lab somewhere on an abandoned space station. As the piece progresses, Hancock provides chilly Fender Rhodes that bounces playfully against the more earthy strains of Williams' acoustic bass, until the legions of synths and sequencers rise up once and for all to drive the piece home

Tripi, I'll have to get this one. I have Head Hunters on SACD which adds an amazing sense of air and space to Watermelon Man intro which needs to be heard to be believed. It's so realistic you feel Herbie and the band is performing it right in front of you.

OK I've saved the best for last but not everyone will be able to experience this one as it should be experienced. The multichannel SACD version is what is meant in this one. This provides in my opinion the ultimate surround sound experience in an album and believe me I've listened to a few.

Avalon by Roxy Music (Bryan Ferry)

B00009KSEZ.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_V1115762555_.jpg

The Main Thing and Take a Chance with Me are absolutely awesome with the latter being reminiscent of Roy Orbison and Chris Isaaks. Fantastic album and in this SACD multichannel version hard to get better.

By the way if anyone wants "Hallucinogen In Dub" it's available on www.demonoid.com if you register.

There's a lossless torrent which means you'll get identical quality to an orginal and not a crappy MP3.

When tripping, I tip my hate to some of the following:

Ozric Tentacles

In Dub

Sphongle

Selected Indian morning ragas

And if on weed:

Tool

Early Iron Maiden

Early Jethro Tull (up to 1974)

Kula Shaker (all)

Jimi Hendrix - South Saturn Delta

Cream - First two albums
