Hi all, Just wondering if anybody knew of Iochroma australis in Australia or in general. It looks like a beautiful plant. It kind of looks like a hybrid between a Brugmansia and a Iochroma eg. larger flower than Iochroma, but smaller plant than Brugmansia. It has shifted names in the past, being under Dunalia australis and Acnistus australis. It is native to Argentina or Bolivia supposedley. ATM AQUIS has the plant listed as OK to import seed, but recently I had some seized by them with the reason there wasn't enough info on this plant to allow it into australia, as far as my research goes it is Ok to bring in, so im a little confused as to the right info. Like alot of solanaceae it has withanolides, but not tropane alkaloids. If anyone has some more info on this plant would be great and also possibley interesting.... the one i saw was at Hamiltons , larger than the one above , but probably pretty expensive. Was ready for the Autumn Show

I have seen one at a nursery in Western Sydney. I was told it could possibley be for sale but didnt have a price mentioned. Good Luck

This is absolutely terrible.......I have heard and seen of the odd bit of damage from disrespectful people, and small plant thefts but nothing like this....... karma will come back

I think i know the one your talking about, i think that one was Cereus hildmannius var uraguenensis If itsthe one from pic 1 on Bells Line of Road then it looks like thios now pic 2, the owners have done some chainsaw pruning, not looking too good now. The crest in the middle of pic 1 is about 30-35cm wide, and the cutting that is about 80cm tall are from the same mother plant that is pic 3. I saw it and asked the owner who was a very kind elderly gentleman, who said to take whatever i wanted. It is some type of Cereus sp. ,as the flowers show. Sydney RBG has something very similar, as does Hamilton's Cacti, but my investigations haven't confirmed what exactly.

where are you located?? Im sure Sydney RBG has some in their Cacti and Succulent Garden, if you were going to have a look at it..

My favourite one also, so very true about the dry heat, but fortunately for our B.sanguinea's, or unfortunately (depending on what we're trying to grow and for all the other tropicals we have, B.aborea will appartely tolerate some cold also. I live in a pretty much consistantly cold area, with normally good rainfall. I read in a book that once the temp gets above 22-23c then that inhibits the flower development, which from what i have noticed on our plants in the yard is relatively true.

Pretty amazing. Its in Victoria for those interested. You'd need a flat top truck to move it,l crane or something mechanical

Yeah, the image can be deceptive but i can't really find much info about the plant in general. The flower is suposed to be about 5-7cm length from what i have read. So kind of in between the larger Brugsmansia flowers and thinner Iochroma. Dunalia spinosa is an intersesting pant also i think. As far as i know the labelling was correct, ah well might try again then..
