dawnbeaver Posted October 22, 2013 Here are my first efforts at grafting... lophophora var caespitosa on to Trichocereus Pachanoi (possibly a hybrid crossed with Peruvianus)... This one grafted onto a Trich that I grew from seed. This one went very well...
dawnbeaver Posted October 22, 2013 This one I grafted onto a shorter rootstock, there is some lifting of the loph, I think due to excessive shrinkage of the rootstock. I will see if the union lasts, it is growing however...
dawnbeaver Posted October 22, 2013 (edited) The Monster... Bigger is better I was told so there we are... I was concerned that the loph would burst but so far so good. It seems to be growing so fast that it is clearly larger each day... Edited January 11, 2014 by dawnbeaver
dawnbeaver Posted October 22, 2013 Here is a root that I took a scion from, it was dusted with sulphur powder after the cut was made. Hopefully it will make it...
BreakingBarrett Posted October 22, 2013 Awesome grafts you have there, loving the size difference between the last trich and the loph attached to it
dawnbeaver Posted October 22, 2013 Finally, here are some babies that I am getting ready to graft. I have had no success with tiny ones so am letting them grow bigger before retrying... One of them is pink, any ideas as to why?
dawnbeaver Posted October 22, 2013 Awesome grafts you have there, loving the size difference between the last trich and the loph attached to it Thanks, there is a little redness that I was not happy with but as it had to be done where it sat in the greenhouse, the conditions were not ideal. The ones that were dried more carefully had none of this redness.
bogfrog Posted October 22, 2013 (edited) Awesome tidy grafts Dawnbeaver! And i see you are a new zealander! Fantastic There seems to be a few of us colonising the forum now. I love the photo with the child for size comparison That graft very much reminds me of my mates first graft, same sized stock and scion, believe it or not 2-3 years later the scion is now as big as a basketball -- so yes, big is better! (In some ways atleast, it pups like crazy and is prone to splitting so water carefully if aesthetics are important to you) As for the pink seedling, i would say its just a little over-exposure to sunlight. It should adjust soon and eventually turn green again. Lovely photos, plants and greenhouse! Welcome to the forum! Edit: oh and check out the NZ seed and plant trade thread sometime if your keen http://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=36628 Edited October 22, 2013 by Ceres

phytolator Posted January 11, 2014 That tall graft is awesome dawnbeaver!! I've just been ogling your photo series of the same graft in the "flower heavy" thread...Did you keep the graft humid in the initial days? apply any downward pressure?I've had only limited success grafting to trichs but am now itching to have another hoon on it! :-)

dawnbeaver Posted January 12, 2014 (edited) So did the root have shoots? One made it... One did not... But before it expired I took two pups that had grown on it in it's death throes to do these tall grafts... Edited January 13, 2014 by dawnbeaver
dawnbeaver Posted January 13, 2014 That tall graft is awesome dawnbeaver!! I've just been ogling your photo series of the same graft in the "flower heavy" thread... Did you keep the graft humid in the initial days? apply any downward pressure? I've had only limited success grafting to trichs but am now itching to have another hoon on it! :-) It was too big in it's half hot water cylinder container to shift so I tried to keep the greenhouse humid while the graft took. For downward pressure I placed a small piece of bicycle handlebar tape over it and wrapped bait elastic (thin elastic thread available at all good fishing shops) over it and around the spines on the rootstock over and over to get what I thought was the correct downward pressure. I didnt take any pics of it (I did video the procedure but cant find the vid, I'll update when it turns up) but it looked a bit like these ones although these dont have the handlebar tape mentioned above...
