mud Posted April 3, 2012 (edited) So, when are 'we' putting a shitload of sab cactus pic uploads into a kickarse book? Who owns the pics(?) where do proceeds go? are pre-suppitory questions excellent, aren't they? Edited April 4, 2012 by mud
shruman Posted April 3, 2012 Ahhh fuck it go the whole hog & we'll show up Ratsch's encyclopedia.... On a serious note I would rather see support go to those who truly need it for publishing real books, they do it very tough & enough praise, appreciation & financial restitution cannot be given.
qualia Posted April 3, 2012 a coffee table book about cacti? would be cool, 315 pages of high res glossy pics, printed on 100% hemp paper,

myco Posted April 4, 2012 i've always planned on making a book of fungi pics when i have enough good photos to use a cacti one would be great to the one problem with books though especially decent qaulity books is theyre really quite expensive to have made unless your having thousands made in wich case its still gonna be expensive haha wich means you have to sell them for a pretty high price wich is not an easy thing to do
Halcyon Daze Posted April 4, 2012 We need to register a entheo-society and have monthly online meets. The native orchid club I was in used to treat themselves to all sorts of hollidays and parties with the profits they made. Those Christmas BBQs with the oldies (and all their hot grand daughters) were a hoot.
Alice Posted April 4, 2012 (edited) If the goal is not to make money, then most photo places (even at Big W etc) and a bucketload of online places let you custom design photo books. And it's pretty damn cheap really. I just got one made for our anniversary from this mob http://www.digitalpr....com/photobooks You can choose the layout exactly as you want. I was really impressed, I couldn't fault the quality and was pleased that it didn't have any markings/logos of the company spoiling it either. Hardcover books start at $30, but their smaller softcover books start at a measly 10 bucks. I reckon we'd be able to find a place that would give us a discount if we ordered 10. qualia Posted April 4, 2012 a good idea would be a coffee table books with photos of cacti, fungi etc and exerts of both insightful and witty moments from the forum archives. would be lots of stuff worth putting in or even a coffee table book about ethnos in general, with accompanying information on the history and culture surrounding their traditional use. in the case of modern cultivars of cacti etc. where theres not so much "traditional use', i suppose there could be some info on where they came from and who led/contributed to their development etc.

mud Posted April 4, 2012 ^Kramer? lol. Well, if nothing else might we ask Torsten (?) if its cool to rip a bunch of high quality cacti porn and everyone chips in to cover printing costs so SAB members can get a cost price reference? It'd be hard to make money from the venture, without all kinds of disclaimers and legal crap regarding photo ownership, wouldnt it? So instead, maybe just for the love of it? Evil Genius Posted April 4, 2012 (edited) Well heres the thing, printing something like this is expensive. Even if you use semi-quality paper and printings. Trout once mentioned here that he had to make a pretty big investment for his San Pedro book and unfortunately the market for books about cacti is not as big as it would deserve to be. I would certainly throw in some pics as well. Pics are not the problem. Would also throw in some money for printing but i definately doubt you´d get enough money to even cover the costs. But im certainly happy if i should be proven wrong about this. Edited April 4, 2012 by Evil Genius
Alice Posted April 4, 2012 Can you get descriptions for photos in that photo book alice Do you mean can you add text? Yep, you can pretty much do whatever you want within the confines of the page size. You can have as little or as many photos as you want, text etc. It's just like making a powerpoint presentation or word document I suppose, just drap and drop, edit borders if you want, change background colour, add text-boxes. Really easy, you can make it completely custom or select auto arrange so it does it for you. Once I uploaded the photos (which took a while - big file sizes) doing the layout was really quick. Quite fun too.

mud Posted April 4, 2012 6 x 4" digital photo prints are about 12c each (10x 15cm high quality, digital prints) even IF a bulk deal discount was not achievable, you could still assemble a few hundred awesome colour photo pics (at standard retail price) for less than a trouts notes.
whitewind Posted April 4, 2012 Sounds like a great idea, very achievable. If you had enough people, we could all contribute a page each, people could contribute a page of artwork if they don't take photos, text if they can't create a visual display. We pay for our page to be printed and get a name in there somewhere.
solomon Posted April 4, 2012 As stated above we could get photos/pages printed. Then maybe some homemade binding, could give it a nice individual feel to each book as well. Just an idea, I guess it depends on how professional people want it to look yada yada
Himdumb Posted April 4, 2012 (edited) The images from a website will not be high quality when printed. Images uploaded to websites are stored at 72dpi and high quality print images are at 300dpi. You would need the original images (or at least copies of the original images in 300dpi or greater). They are also stored in different formats, RGB for computer images CMYK for print, but i think those are easily converted. But you cannot take a 72dpi image and make it into a 300dpi image. I would love to see more high color/quality images in print, but printing a webpage will not give you the quality you would want. mud Posted April 10, 2012 Time to put our pics somewhere that can handle decent quality then?
Alice Posted April 10, 2012 So the uploaded gallery images are scaled down for the web, right? The authors should have the higher quality originals then? Even phones can take pretty nice photos these days.
theuserformallyknownasd00d Posted April 10, 2012 Great idea mud! I would be more than happy to contribute both pics/financially if we get enough interest. I like the idea of each person paying for their page or even pages..? this could also lead it into the general cacti/fungus/medicinal plant combined idea, which could be easier to fund and get interest? I think we'd need a head editor and designer though just to keep some sort of formal structure to it, many cooks etc.... There are heaps of great image hosting sites around, my girl is a photographer so ill ask what she uses. We could have an official 'hi qual images thread" in the chillspace maybe? It can just have a disclaimer and link to our hi res images, somebody could even take 'moderater' of this hi res service and upload them once we email them over? Flikr is fairly easy for stuff like this D00d
Foo Posted April 10, 2012 I think the best way to start this project would be for interested parties of the forum to pre-purchase the book, before printing. After we have everything in place of course. I think this project really needs someone to take the leads.
