I had a log that started to rot last year and cut away the rot which left this funky looking chunk of cactus. I let it callous up and put it in a pot a few months back, I noticed it had rooted recently and I noticed it is pupping!

post-13244-0-41447900-1404353217_thumb.j

I will have to look through some pictures to figure out what it is as I didn't have it labeled.

more like what did I do these last few months........... :scratchhead:

just cacti talk...

got a nice batch/trade of

Corryocactus brevistylus seeds from Peru (Fruits are globular and spiny as well as edible and tasty)

soaked ~20 seeds at ~20c for 2 days ...surfaced sown, mid part of shoebox propagator ~20c

2 sprouted

so I place 5 seeds (unsoaked) on surface ..same place etc...misted most days & 2 sprouted

So they like it dry..

soaked ~50 seeds @ ~20c 24 hrs

planted 1/2 on 1 side of the propagator corner...

planted other 1/2 on the other/opposite side of the propagator corner...(left side ..right side)

both @ 19 - 20c...turned the propagator on alternative days for equal light ...both new/same soil/potting mix..exact conditions..

1 side almost 90% strike....the other side, now weeks later, not a thing!....go figure :scratchhead:

What did I do?

I swore at a cactus, calling it the triple damned bastard son of a blackrot infested cylindropuntia!

...So I have this bridgesii, one of my oldest, the freakball has always annoyed me. It grows quite slow. It sunburns like an irish girl. Its skinny. Its four times as susceptible to blackrot as the next most rot prone bridgesii I own. And the thing refuses to branch.

And now its trying to split in half! :BANGHEAD2:

post-146-0-80224500-1404415536_thumb.jpg

Its been 40°C the last few days and I gave it high nitrogen ferts to try once more to get it to basally pup, but I've never had this happen to a Trich of any sort, what the hell.

(on the up side, when its not covered in scars, it has a nice chiseled angular look to the ribs which is perhaps the only thing saving it from being culled, lol)

s-t-r-e-t-c-h ... morning SABages...

aww no pics you guys? booooo , i always look forward to this thread for pictures...

hasnt anyone taken the pics already ...of the juuls and subden of whoever this sneezio is you mention auxin ...

wouldnt mind seeing a few pics of them...

re the black rot-

i dusted all the cacti with sulphur and put up mosquito screens so i could keep windows open all night , as well as all day

so i can only gather the sulphur dustings and the air , and soak-watering from below just once, as opposed to top watering every day ;

was key

i only operated on the weeping one - was nasty yellow drips

i notice i have a particularly fat bridgesii that is very prone too

-edit- also it seems that changing the media in the pots to akadama-like shit , may have helped too

but only if it turns out the creature from the black latrine ....does spread via contact/splashing, like it appears to have done here...

via - no sciariad flies... ! im sure those nasty little bastages had something to do with it transferring from one cactus to another

, somehow

anyhoo now the cacti are starting to callous/heal where the black rot was , some making scars, but not all

- good luck!

and give us a shout if you want any pics of the progression from rot - to not

-Thunder Horse

and... is it just me or do some pachanoi seem totally immune to it?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today I watered the flowering "blatant" pachanoi again , all the others still moist looking , i gather this is one of the only blatently pachanoi clones with its single downward little(roughly 1cm)spine - thanks to help from a cool person here at sab

enjoyed some flowering progress, potted up my new pelecyphora :) i care three shits and a fuck about if its not a pelecyphora if your'e thinking it.. whoever reads it and thinks it, no offence meant...

.....and some vanilla pomponas :P, as if that wasnt enough,

the other(back up) pompona source in yorkshire came up trumps as well

post-14443-0-15226700-1404475123_thumb.jpost-14443-0-03798600-1404475190_thumb.jpost-14443-0-73483100-1404475212_thumb.jpost-14443-0-18045100-1404475297_thumb.j B)post-14443-0-03609600-1404486675_thumb.j

sat down with them for a nice cuppa , or 7

and really enjoyed my progress and phenominal time-scale success and luck with cacti,

and my willingness to share .... and felt grateful

admiring each one and really appreciating it , and all this before the summer holidays have even kicked in properly ...

I guess I owe myself the biggest thanks for caring enough...

im glad i was already 2 years into the hobby before coming here though.... here has laid the icing on the cake as information and ethics rather than of more sought plants for now... ... but so well,

and I do have a validoid to longingly gaze at  ,

cant wait to have something to trade with more of the cool folk here, maybe this time next year will be more dynamic in that sense

and will maybe then feel truely one of "us" instead of being viewed as "one of them"

TH, I got a couple of pectiniferas as Turbinis, the flower is really turbini like, one of the prettiest cacti by far. But worry not: I am not an agent of taxonomy police!

I took off the pressure in my last grafts today, it seems they have taken, except one I regrafted yesterday.

@ mutant ...

hmmm i didnt want folk to have to feel cautious tho either lol ,

ok terbinicarpus ...

I'll try to call them terbies here when applicable , for communications sake :]

and just "main label" em pelecyphs or call em that if im elated about them for some reason (probably lots of reasons to get elated about them too ahead of me)

and explain politely if anyone asks ... as a better way forward ...

I'll go back in the thread/ spend a month search'n more of your posts too

cuz I forgot what ya grafting :innocent_n: and I really need to watch n learn ......my way ,

(overload ... too much is never enough till ya realise ya wasting time -lol )

...and your thread delivery is awesome and fun.

@ethnoguy ...

theyre so cute ! and immaculate! awesome wrk fella! - and what a cool window for them!

mine are doing less well had to be transferred to shadepost-14443-0-20547600-1404503508_thumb.jpost-14443-0-58362000-1404503493_thumb.j

, im suspecting this new media isnt as good for seeds/lings as it is for mature cacti - contrary to bonsai experts advicepost-14443-0-53145800-1404503500_thumb.j

so i didnt bother adding any to the tray of vajaliduspost-14443-0-82866000-1404503520_thumb.j

maybe I'll get round to washing some sand or pinch some aquarium gravel from the fish tank or just sprinkle john innes seed loam as they get taller and fall over

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

if thispost-14443-0-24503900-1404512660_thumb.j keeps on happening maybe I will get to cross it with my pach after all!

some dude from here once did torture 1.5 y.o. baby cow (not) and he found them as tasty as your best mature veil.

this was done with bridge-babies cows though...
