To cut the mother or the pup?

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to take a photo and post it tomorrow as my boyfriend reckons I've got a black thumb and I shouldn't do anything to the plant in question until you've seen exactly what I'm talking about. Looks like I'll have to do a good search to get a difiniative answer on the angle vs straight cut as well.

To cut the mother or the pup?

Thanks for the advice. I think what I'll do is remove the mother plant only leaving a small section remaining. I've read cutting on an angle is better for promoting more pupping. I'm then going to make it into 3-4 sections, callous them and plant a couple up right and have a go at planting some on their sides. Even though summer is ending it has been very dry and hot during the day so I think they will still do fairly well. The only thing is should I bother treating the exposed cut (when I remove the mother plant) with fungicide as it will have to callous outdoors? Even though I know I have to do it I'm a bit nervous as she was the healthiest specimen of my original stock and I would hate anything to happen to her!

To cut the mother or the pup?

I have a few trich's that have been ground planted for about six months. The pups on some of these plants are now nearly equalling the size of the mother plant and appear to be draining resources as well as destabilising the plant. Would it be better to cut the (very healthy) pup off or cut the mother plant? If removing the mother plant, how much length should I leave at the base? As the plants are already in the ground should I use a funguside on the remaining section while it callouses? Thanks

    my garden

Well you've got alot of choices and it really depends on what your budget is. My suggestion is to keep it as native as possible as these plants are already well adapted to drought conditions. I can't really help you with specific species but planting some more shade trees would be a good idea and then work around any features you might want. These could include some nice sculptures or a pebbled/paved path - maybe Zen inspired with a tropical/ethno/native vibe The possibilites are endless and only limited by your imagination. Take your time as well as it will pay off in the long run if you end up with something you love that doesn't look like a back yard blitz job. Check out some garden design books in your local library or book shop for some design ideas. I'm also told Caboolture markets have cheap plants for sale. Good luck and I'm so jealous!

    Assimilation

All excellent and thoughtful replies. I would just like to add though that this sort of process takes time Shiva. Be careful not to burn too many bridges by assuming that other people are ignorant or that you are so different from them. Everything is interconnected and people who you think are your enemies today could be your friends tomorrow. Besides, we all deserve people to be kind and understanding towards us - ie; treat people like you would like to be treated - with acceptance and understanding that we all have our idiosynchrasies. Anyways, when you really look deeply, we are actually more alike than you think. On a basic level all anybody wants is happiness. Contemplating on this you can develop a sense of compassion for all beings and thus work with positive emotions first. There is a saying that I can't quite think of at the moment - something about watering the seeds of joy before attempting to work with the aspects of yourself/others that you don't like...we all have the potential to change and grow and we need to respect that in others as well no matter how they treat us.

  9. Came across a book on a topic I have only just started to learn about - ecopsychology. An interesting combination of environmentalism and psychology. One of the contributors was Leslie Gray whom some of you may know of. It seems she has managed to integrate her tribal origins and interest in 'soul healing' within a modern psychotherapy context by 'journeying' with clients to other realities and helping them to heal themselves by developing thier relationships and appreciation for the earth and plants. Inspiring to see professionals integrating traditional and spiritual healing methods into contemporary practice. See what you think. http://www.woodfish.org/power2.html

    Tripping with a purpose.

Maybe the 'singularity' is comparable to a point of concentration which you have to move through before the whole thing opens up. Once you go beyond that point you realise it was just relative to where you were standing. In regards to taking 'something' to achieve this, sometimes when you are trying too hard you just get jibberish. I remember a friend telling me once about a trip where she kept seeing crazy, rotating mandalas of cartoon elephants when she was hoping for something enlightening and spiritual.....by the end of it all she got was a serious headache.
  11. This breaks my heart as I would dearly love to start an ornamental psychadelic garden but due to space constraints it's not possible. Therefore I have a few seeds to trade if anyone here has what I'm looking for. Seeds to trade: 1g Ipomoea violacea 'Heavenly Blue' 10 seeds Ipomoea muelleri 10g Argyreia nervosa 'Hawaiian Baby Woodrose' 15 seeds Silene undulata 'Xhosa Dream Herb' 15 seeds Petalostylis cassioides ' Butterfly Bush' What I'm after: Not sure if this is asking too much but I would love a Lophophora williamsii (like everyone I'm sure). I would also like a good variety of chilli seeds such as Piquante Cherry Peppers or Pepperdews, Pepperoncini (sweet banana chilli) and Jalapenos. I know there are shit loads of different chillies but I am after interesting varieties - (not birds eye and none of the super hot ones). I know I could probably get chilli seeds elsewhere but I wanted the above seeds to go to a good home and a green thumb before they expired.

    Lady Bug Love

Yeah thanks, I'm really happy I could get them into the ground and the spot I have is great for drainage and sunlight. They really seem to be enjoying spreading out thier roots It's not much of a collection but I'm slowly working on it As for the yellow bugs - yeah, slightly unusual but I have seen them before (I think), or maybe it's something you ate
