is there more advantage than with just leaving them on the peres to resprout?

Never really thought about it, after 2+ years on pere, the rootstock is virtually spent. Many snapped under their own weight, so wouldn't have been an option anywayz. The rootstock will last many more years than pere's. And it's alot easier to cut the pups off for regrafting when it is cut free of the pere.
