Failed ariocarpus graft rooted

I recently tried grafting an Ariocarpus fissuratus seedling to a peres stock.

No luck there, the graft failed.

I think it may be because these seeedlings are much drier, making them less likely then lophs and trichs to join with the stock.

I placed the failed callused seedling back on to the sand layer in the seedling container hoping it would root.

Checked it today and a root has appeared from the vascular bundle.

So there is some hope with a failed seedling graft.

Hope she lives.

I actually put all my failed lopho grafts back onto the soil, in the tray they were harvested from..

when they dont take of course...

I did this as a lark one time and found it rooted, not only did ot root it grew faster after rooting than the seedlings that werent cut as attempted grafts

(seedlings planted at the same time -its brothers and sisters if you will)

now I do it with all failed grafts,,,,a surprising amount of them will set roots - these cacti have pretty strong survival traits,,,, same with failed tricho grafts,,,

If you choose - they can be re-attempted as grafts in a month or two...

Hopefully people will see this, and in the future it will save alot of little baby lophs otherwise destined for the compost pile.

Cheers

Well I'll be buggered! I will have to try this with any scions that dont take from now on. I would have thought they'd just shrivel and die, but I guess with adequate humidity anythings possible Thanks for posting those awesome pix Rahli!
